Fair enough, and whehter he wants to stay is an issue, also with what Melnyk is saying about the teams finances. I just feel that Murray wouldn't make that knee jerk reaction, even with Alfredsson leaving without being aware of the financial ramifications of needing to resign Ryan.

Maybe Murray didn't know how bad the financial situation is? Ive seen Yost blog a few times of the tough economical situation Melnyk/Sens are in, and that Murray simply has no cap room to make any moves/roster improvements outside of the organization. Plus it's not as simple as just resigning Ryan, he's going to want a hefty raise of at least 2 million more. That almost forces the Sens hand, and Ryan's for that matter, to not return after this contract expires. It would also depend on how much importance Ryan puts into factors like location, teams ability to make the playoffs, team spending to win, line mates, coach etc etc
Like you said, and just about everyone concedes, he may still resign. That said, the list of reasons "against" is longer than the reasons "for".
As for the Alfredsson situation, it seemed like Murray knew enough that he couldn't have both and had to pick one. Logical choice in Ryan, but it speaks volumes about the financial handcuffs he has to operate with. Seems obvious Murray would shed other salaries and pay to keep Ryan, but how bad does Ryan want a chance at being an RFA and going to the highest bidder and his choice of destination as opposed to settling for mediocrity in Ottawa?
