This is a good graphic. I really noticed that last night, when Carlson had five or six shots from the point on the same PP. He was wide open and had a clear shot from the point, but there was very little traffic in front. I was surprised when he didn't try to walk in a bit on that play. Or that the Caps didn't give up on that play and try something else.
It was a really good illustration of how you'd look at the shot totals from this game and figure that the Leafs stole a game, but really the shots don't indicate dangerous scoring chances. In fact, those Caps' PPs were good examples of sequences that would pump up the Caps' Corsi, but were actually kind of dumb plays because they kept trying something that wasn't working. - Zezel
Yup, if you count up "scoring chances" (shots from within the slot), it's 13 to 10 in favour of the Capitals; not exactly dominant considering that they had two extra PPs.
I would like to see our shot count up though; all those shots from outside may have been easily redirected, tipped, or screened in, so there is something to be said for shots on net in general. |

agreed 100%. franson, phaneuf, and gardiner have a decent enough wrist shot to get it through to the net quickly enough for a re-direct, as was evidenced last night. |

I agree, I'm glad they've been able to win but the shot differential and zone time is a work in progress. However they've provided a pretty good example of where boxing out the front of the net and good goaltending can get you. |

Most of you will likely disagree, but regardless of the SOG, I felt the Leafs had much more quality scoring chances and were the better team last night. Protect the lead mode, and the uneven PP chances are the causes of the SOG totals for this team. That and the fact the Leafs are a "pass and play team", not a " just get it on net" team. - systemtool
Agreed.... Especially last night where most of the outside shots there was no traffic in front of the net so not chance for tip ins or screens |

They gave up that disgusting package for two years of him, for sure. Why would he stay? An American playing for a team with no future, that can't pay him. No way he stays.

Salary is irrelevant in comparison to the gap that would exist if we didn't have these players.
So many people on here seem to think that a team can just go to one of the Big Box stores and buy a new top 6 forward on Black Friday for 50% off. |

I just hope that Datsyuk getting (frank)ed by Cowen doesn't mean that I lose this week, as he was my only guy playing and the other guy has 4 players.... lets hope Ottawa loses |

I would love to discuss this. You see, cap space is all relative. Relative to whether you use it all, or just some of it. The Leafs are an all team. The Sens are a some team. Why? Because the Leafs can afford it, and the Sens can't. Why? Because the Leafs owner(s) is rich, and the Sens owner is poor.
So, can Toronto afford to over pay some players? Yes. Can the Senators afford to over pay some players? No.
In short, coming here and bragging ..or trolling..player salaries only works if your team is capable of spending money on icing a good team. Clearly, the Sens are not one of those teams. So, as you sit here and think Ryan > Kessel, just remember, the Leafs are > Sens, and it's money well spent.
So yea, enjoy your bargain basement players, bargain basement city, bargain basement team, and bargain basement place in the standings. |
