If you go and read last night's post-game blog at Maple Leaf Warm Oven and check out the shot location chart, you can see how Randy's PP game plan came together to basically box out OV and limit his one-timer at the expense of allowing Carlson and Backstrom open shots from the point.
The shots are all mostly clustered on the outside and as Reimer said in his presser, "I've had alot tougher games with 30-35 shots".
I count 31 shots outside of the slot:

This is a good graphic. I really noticed that last night, when Carlson had five or six shots from the point on the same PP. He was wide open and had a clear shot from the point, but there was very little traffic in front. I was surprised when he didn't try to walk in a bit on that play. Or that the Caps didn't give up on that play and try something else.
It was a really good illustration of how you'd look at the shot totals from this game and figure that the Leafs stole a game, but really the shots don't indicate dangerous scoring chances. In fact, those Caps' PPs were good examples of sequences that would pump up the Caps' Corsi, but were actually kind of dumb plays because they kept trying something that wasn't working. |

Corsi. Fenwick. whatever.
If the team was five games below .500 - but was outshooting the opposition such as was the case when Jason Blake was the primary offensive "weapon", were the fans demanding they shoot less? - BorjeFan4Ever
C'mon Caps played Fri night and the Leafs couldn't muster no better effort than that against them... |

Outstanding game by Reimer....
But god damn 50 shots...How much longer this team gonna be able to continue getting out played/outshot and win... - Fruitcakenipple
At least 30-35 of them were from more than 20 feet from goal. I have no issue with Carlson being dished up shots when Reims can see them all the way. When you check out number of quality chances (rather than Blaking into the goalie's logo from 40 feet) the Leafs usually are on par or ahead in those respects... |

I guess we will find out from here on as the schedule gets much tougher...Sure would be nice to spend more of the game in the opponents end rather than in ya own...
Man Rielly sure looked good last night...His best game this year...

Yeah really, after while I wasn't even worried about the totally wide open point man, because Reimer was going to stop those all day. Pretty much any goalie would really. Ovie should have just gone and stood in the blue paint at that point.

Rielly was great... I'm really excited to see what he can do as he ages and matures as a player - lumlums
It's impressive how well he plays in his own end considering his age...Tons of speed and very smart on the puck wont be long before the offence comes..
Top pairing D-man in a couple years...Phaneuf and Rielly gonna make the Leafs a very dangerous team down the road.. |

Aside from the Caps getting a lot of shots, I felt the Leafs played a good game, generated a lot of scoring chances, and were the better team. The offense does need to get going and start firing on all cylinders once again, but that will happen eventually. Too many weapons to stay quiet for too long.
The Leafs have one of those weeks coming up that can either make things a living hell and nightmare for the team, or clear path to some smooth sailing. Should be interesting. Happy to finally have a Monday nighter to watch. |

I agree with this motto. If it doesn't need to be done now, do it only when neccessary, hopefully it won't be done for a long long time. |

I agree, The solid system the Leafs are playing, the great goaltending, all the Leafs need if for the offense to start rolling, they will be a serious contender. |
