At least that's not insulting. Could you imagine if the chinese came and took our land then kept calling us Australians for 500 years.
- PhillySportsGuy

Being Aussie, I'd have a Foster's & laugh it off over an Australian Rules Football game.

The insertion of Oliver Lauridsen onto the top pair and the passionate play of Jason "Art Ross" Akeson.

This Oliver Ekman Lauridsen is a stud!

They can keep the name. The mascot has to be changed to a cow though.
- PhillySportsGuy

Yes. The cow is sacred to Indians. Makes sense.

I find it amusing that we cannot rid ourselves of the word 'indians' when referring to native americans.

Never has one mistake ever lasted this long.

- PhillySportsGuy

Yea... Why didn't he call them by thier real names... Native Americans... Silly Columbus.

I am not an expert in this area by any means, but I believe most tribes prefer first to be referred to by their tribal heritage (Cherokee, Cree, etc) or, generically in Canada as First Nation and many dislike the term "Native American" more than the term Indian. I could be mistaken, though, and I apologize if I am incorrect.
- bmeltzer

It's all so complicated. I had an african american studies professor who said that when she was a kid, the term 'black' was totally inappropriate and still bothers her to this day even though it's accepted.

I also hate the term african-american. It's stupid because most 'african-americans' have been in America longer than white people.

Probably not as long as the accompanying myth that Columbus 'discovered' the New World.

Columbus gets a pass, still waiting on everybody else's excuses though.

Well it's all about perspective there. If I'm European in the 15th century, I didn't know North America was there!!

Pretty sure you're right, Bill. I'm Blackfoot (not enough to matter but enough to care about it, 6.25% -- as much as I am Italian) and it's more or less vicarious offense being taken. That is, folks are taking offense for those they think would or should be offended.

It has more to do with the fact that it hasn't been fixed for 500 years. Not Columbus making the mistake.

At some point someone said "We're not in Indians so they aren't Indians, but let's just keep calling them that"

I hate the fact we still acknowledge the difference... But if you didn't have those boxes to check on tax form, or application, you couldnt get governement benefits.

She's got goalie thighs....

I bet she's better at stopping breakaways than Bryzgalov.

I'm not getting political with you. I just never understood why we use the word Indians to refer to people who have never stepped foot in India
