Do any of you guys think Emery will sign with us again this summer?
- flyersbuzz

If Ray still thinks he can carry the load for a team, he's gonna wanna go elsewhere (again) to prove that if Mason keeps the net from him.

I'd imagine it's akin (but not exactly like) the veteran QB who thinks he should be the starter and will move to a team where the QB situation is uncertain so that he gets a better shot at the starting job.

Would you be okay with 3 years, $4M?
- jmatchett383

That's as high as I would go, but I'd also want to see the same consistent play from Mason through at least the first half of this season before handing that out.

I said if he continues to play this way. That was the preface for the discussion.
- jmatchett383

The only guys in the league that have been able to maintain Mason's current level of excellence have been pre-break TT, Lundqvist and Rask. Unless you think he's on that level, it behooves you to wait for his numbers to regress (as they will) before extending him.

Otherwise, you end up like the teams that are currently overpaying guys like Ryan Miller, Jonathan Quick and Pekka Rinne, etc for huge years they will have trouble replicating.

Think Homer will push for it, too, is what I was saying... and I'm not sure they'll be able to depress his cap-hit by much since they'll be paying for UFA years.

My optimistic guess is 3-years, $4.5M+. Puts him around Halak/Schneider/Pavelec territory with a little post-lockout bump.

In my nightmares, they go full on Bobrovsky/Jimmy Howard.

- Tomahawk

I think the best comparable is Halak, and I can see them doing 4x4, max -- there's no reason to go higher, and a few reasons not to go that high.

Pekka Rinne is over payed, sure, but I would take Jonathan Quick at 5.8 mill pretty much any day of the week

3-4 yrs @ 3-4 mil...that's what I think is fair at this point. It gives him twice or more than his current salary to reward his fine play but acknowledges that he's not (yet) an established elite guy and that the Flyers had faith and took a chance on him, resurrecting his career and getting him out of Cbus. Ideally, I think 4 yrs 3.5 per...giterdunnholmergrend!

After witnessing the roller-coaster career of Sergei Bobrovsky (and many, many other goaltenders), I'd hope they learn their lesson with that position.

Although, I'm certainly not confident that will be the case.

If Mason's camp wants that much money now, I'd just qualify him and let the chips fall. D. Dubnyk would be my back-up plan.

- bradleyc4

Wait, what? Dubnyk? Man, I'd rather go with Ray Emery for two years as the unquestioned starter, then hope and pray that Heeter or Stolarz ride in on a white horse.

Dubnyk is playing better now, but he was brutal for the Oilers when it mattered.

Or stop with the Rinaldo experiment.
- bradleyc4

Rinaldo had some pretty good plays on the PK last night. And he's got a pretty good shot. That "penalty" of his that led to the 2nd goal was weak as hell, and likely doesn't get called if the Senators player doesn't trip over someone's skate a second after Rinaldo disengages. And the penalty is made to look that much worse considering what wasn't called on Jake while we were on the PP and he was carrying the puck across the blue line. Bush league.

Exactly. And if and when Mason's numbers do regress, I'd still be fine paying him 3.5 mill per year for 3-4 yrs if he's putting up at least .915 SVP over the course of a full season (ideally .920 SVP)

So we're going with a tandem on Emery and Yann Danis (or similar bargain) next year? Spectacular. Let's let go of the one guy that has actually performed like a legit starter in net for the first time in 11 years.
- jmatchett383

they need to sign mason and chain him in goal for the next 5 years, no matter what. the worst thing they do is "the hot goalie" carousel. when hank and marty have bad stretches they aren't looking over their shoulder wondering if they'll be riding the bench for 2 weeks. sign mason to a 4 yr $10-11 million deal as soon as you can

They played a strong first forty minutes, then sagged in the third, until the non goal. That seemed to piss them off, but after restoring the two goal lead, they lagged again....and took another dumb penalty.

Those delay of games were a bugaboo last night, but I did think the Flyers did a good job of limiting the opposition's opportunities in that last 5 mins including the PK...Mason saved the penalty shot for Kimmo and the team did a pretty good job of thwarting further attacks from the Sens and keeping them from getting a lot of time in (the Flyers) zone, even getting the shortie empty netter.

I had to work last night and caught the start of the game live and watched the rest on dvr. I thought they looked bad at the start, the B Schenn penalty off the bat with two near goals by the Sens (one off a post).

Nice to see them stabilize things after a shaky start.

One of the best things for me last night was the play of Voracek. I think only Bigg E mentioned it in the comments today, but he was really flying.
This is what I hoped and expected to see from him as a continuation from his great season last year. Nearly every shift he created a scoring chance. He looked like one of the fastest skaters for both teams. All star form really.

Simmonds also continues his good play. He has been playing at a high level the past seven games after looking like a hyperkinetic giraffe to start the season.

Coburn and Grossmann continue to be steady. Great to see Kimmo play like, well Kimmo!

I totally get both sides of the Mason contract argument, but right now am enjoying his stellar play too much to worry about it.
I'd wait to see the whole year before making a final deal.
To sign him to a multi year deal right now is buying high.
I do badly want stability in goal, but also no more Bryz type contract numbers for any goalie.

So we're 20 games in, Mason is playing exceptionally well and we're scoping out his replacement already?

And people call me pessimistic.
