Looking back at that forward group, it was a shame Pronger got hurt because they were primed for a nice run.
- PhillySportsGuy

Agreed, the Flyers were plagued by that injury to Pronger. If you think about it, it set the organization back a few years.

so gardiner will be better than brayden schenn? you just don't make a trade like that man
- 2Real

I'm not saying that -- really, I'm not. I'm saying that trades happen, and usually when you're trading for a young defenseman, you're trading for what you hope they're going to do as opposed to what they're doing, because as we've seen, nobody trades defensemen who are doing anything at a high level.

I'll feel that way about Chris Pronger. Even though he was aging and was only around for a couple of years, that guy was so damn good when he was here...man. Having a guy like that around...it just changes the game. It totally changes how you play.

Damn. Miss that guy.

- AllInForFlyers

I loved watching Pronger on the ice, and intimidating the beats off the ice... but to me that trade was Quixotic GM'ing at its worst.

The root of all problems is always the Pronger injury.

I know I'm right. Carter and Giroux had a huge game together back in January 23 2011. It was an afternoon game in Chicago. It was an outrange on these boards because Carter was our best faceoff man prior to the move.

In 2011 our top line was Hartnell, Briere and Leino. Mike Richards never played anywhere but center. We traded for Versteeg and off the top of my head I cannot remember who their left Wing was, I'm gonna say maybe Carcillo. Giroux was centering Carter and JvR for a while beforeing season's end.

- Schenn2shine

But Carter was not a full time wing that season. He played wing some, sure. But not full time, which was my contention.

I purged my memory cache of all things Jeff Carter... Mike Richards on the other hand... I've never been able to forget.

By the time they were traded I was done with them. I didn't devalue their ability to play the game or anything they accomplished in the Orange and Black but their act had tempered my ability enjoy rooting.

I don't even watch Kings games now. I just hate looking at them.

This season is the first season in a while I don't feel put off by anyone on the team.

For the two of three games Pronger played that playoffs, he was a clear difference maker, even at 50%. It was amazing to me the first game he did play because Laviolette only gave him PP time. He could certainly run a power play.

They traded Richards and Carter before Pronger got hurt... In all reality though, I'm starting to think they should have kept those guys....

Funny, this is the first season that I've ever genuinely felt animosity toward a Flyers player before... take a wild guess who it is.

Yes, you're dead on.

In fact I believe Laviolette kindly allowed Zherdov to play in the Chicago game I'm speaking of. Carter and Zherdov were Giroux's wingers.

Hey, you've certainly explained your take on that, very well...it's a logical position, and it certainly didn't end well, for him or us.

But for me...that guy was worth the risk. He did everything I thought he would. He just was that damn good.

Pronger missed just about all of the playoffs in 2011 because of a back injury.

They had four guys who could play center and were more effective at center at the time: Richards, Carter, Briere, and Giroux.

And they were all vying for the same ice time.

Someone was gonna go. I was comfortable with getting rid of Carter and still remember driving home and listening to the announcement about Richards and being stunned.

He got stripped again at the blue line last night for an odd man rush.

Umm...I never said Carter was a full time winger. I said he was moved to Wing. You said he didn't play much wing here and he did. He actually played a lot of Wing his final season as a Flyer.............which is what I said the entire time. Not permanent full time wing, a lot of wing.

Carter showed his true colors with his response to the trade... and his subsequent slacking off in Columbus... what a tool.

He sure did. I thought he was done after that but during along off season they traded Carter and Richards and very hesitantly named Pronger captain. I think it took over two months for him to be named and he missed 85 to 90% of that training camp.

Like I said, he played a lot of Wing and was decent there next to Giroux. It was an outrange on these boards because at the time it seemed like Carter was the only one who consistently won faceoffs.
