No, the solution is to give him a 1-year, lowball offer so that he's eager to sign with us when he hits UFA after next year.

So fairly common place.

Sure, if you're a HHOF talent, play in front of a uniquely-defensive system, surrounded by HHOF defenders, or are just plain lucky.

Maybe Mason gets lucky. I'm not putting money down on it.

I'm fairly certain you are not spewing homophobic and misogynistic language nonstop at full volume from the opening faceoff, dropping the F bomb in the third at full shouting volume for the simplest plays. I'm used to the place, I'm not a rookie, but I was tied up in knots by the third period when he started taunting Sens fans (and he was not, so far as I could tell, inebriated).
- bodiva88

no I don't go that far. I wouldn't get into it with other team's fans.

I get angry at the refs for missed calls and bad calls, mostly.

So at the rink you guys didn't know what was going on?
Right after the play on the TV their was a very quick replay where I though, uh oh, but then the play continued for a while.

I think they played ~3 minutes before a stoppage and the eventual review.
That must have been annoying.

- Marc D

Yeah, it was kind of odd. But I knew it must be a review because there was such a long pause and the red tv timeout light wasn't on. And yes, I think it was probably 3 mins. The guy in front of me did have a still of the puck (not sure from what site) just on (we hoped) the line and we were thinking probably a goal but not conclusive for overturning the call on the ice. Thankfully, call went for Flyers.

Clearly the case for Niklas Backstrom, Sean Burke, J.S. Giguere, and Dwayne Rolosson.

And that actually further my point. Even goalies who DON'T meet those numbers (Halak being the closest comparison) get higher-value, longer-term deals that the one I proposed. And several of them were off of ELC's, as opposed to after 5+ years in the league.

There was another uh oh moment for me in the TV audience when Couturier got hurt in the first. The replay showed the Sens guy hitting Couts square in the head with his shoulder, and then Couts standing to the side of the goal, sort of slow and dazed. He looked concussed at that moment.

The TV then showed him in the the ramp behind the bench moving his neck around so at that point he looked to have whiplashed his neck and not be concussed. But for a minute it looked like a head injury.

well we always had the fall back of complaining about the dumb asses (not the regulars) who sat around us and annoyed the living hell out of us
- nastyflyergirl

i can complain about anything...you know that. the dumb asses are also part of what keeps me away. i think i'd need to my own private sound proof booth with food and bathroom to start enjoying the live games again. of course, for the playoffs i can block out most of it.

Actually, given the overabundance of logic on this board recently, I'm thinking of relocating to your municipality. Do you have any vacant, decrepit foreclosures for sale/lease?

I really needed an enforcer last night. We were starting to root for aneurisms for the guy. (A little anger management would go a long way.)

I think that's reasonable. It's just a question of when you take a risk. Do you sign him early for a few years and risk that he can't hold up his current level of play or do you sign a 1 yr extension, he maintains impressive play and then risk losing him to free agency if a deal isn't reached before then. I'd probably prefer the former but with his track record it's obviously hard to tell.
- mcefalu

It might be all a moot point. Does anyone know who much tagging space we have left with the Read and Grioux extensions?

To me I would rather see how he playes for the entire year. He is an RFA, and this is the last year he can be an RFA. If I'm the Flyers, I offer him a 4 year contract in the ballpark of 4.5 million per. If he doesnt accept it, then let someone else make an offer on him. Anything between 5-6 million I would match, anything over that, then your getting 2 firsts a second and third for him.... almost worth the deal.

Mason's save early in the game, i think the first period, where he had to go side to side to make an out of this world save, WOW!!!

This kid is making me a believer!

- ggunky

he's very mobile for a big guy, is great at tracking the puck, and has an explosive butterfly push when he needs to make saves like that one. i loved it.

Pretty sure Backstrom, Burke and Roloson played in uniquely defensive systems, and Giguere played behind Pronger and Neidermayer.

But okay, congrats on furthering your point.

Yes, but long into the process. I was surprised there hadn't been an earlier stoppage, but did figure it out (that it was a replay after the no goal call and continuation of play). But I did ask the Twitterverse. Lou said the play was under review not long before they finally had a decision. And I think it was easy to miss.
- bodiva88

it coincided with a tv timeout, so it probably got lost in the blur of st. patty's day pacs.

I wasn't aware of the shut-down defensive stylings of the mid-00s to present (excluding last year) Minnesota Wild, the pre-Tippett Phoenix Coyotes (Francis had 1 good year as coach), and Giguere (he did it twice, once before those 2 were on the team, sparky). Guess my memory's getting hazy over here.

Oh, I wouldn't sign him until the season is over either. My issue is, if he DOES prove to be a good (not elite) goalie both this year and next year, why wouldn't he test UFA? I know I would. Instead, if they buy a few UFA years at a reasonable (market value) value, you're set for a few years without being tied to him forever, a la Bryzgalov.

I don't know what the upcoming UFA market will be like in 2 years, but why risk it? It's entirely possible that some team gives him a Bryz-lite type of deal and then we're back to bargain hunting again. I don't want to go down that road.

- jmatchett383

Right. There are a lot of goalie on the Market this year. His value and his position wont be great. Let my go into FA market as RFA and see that. We will likely get him to accept a 3-4 year deal for a more the reasonable hit. At that point he will almost be 30 and hopefully will feel the Flyers gave him his career, and will likely stay as long as he is offered market value, but we may have to give him the full 8 years.... taking him to 38. My only insistance would be that the NTC be a limited NTC. He can give a list of 10 teams he doesnt want to go to... Too bad you cant have a full NMC for say 4 years then a partial NTC for 4 years....

I don't want to even think about an 8 year deal now. Give him a market value (3 years @ $3.5M-$4M) to let him know you value him as part of your team moving forward and are expecting him to continue playing (reasonably) well. Then, after that time, re-evaluate your priorities. Maybe Stolarz has come along, maybe Heeter has. But for right now, I'd rather not (frank) around with him and string him along, as I doubt that's a sign of good faith.

Only if there's a better viable option. Apparently, he's played PK at other levels. I think he'll continue to get some time as a 5th PK forward (after Hall, Couturier, Read, and Giroux).
