Here's the kicker: last year, while Franson was being proclaimed the best defenseman on the team, his ES TOI/GA was the second worst on the team behind Holzer.
Gardiner was near the top (in an admittedly smaller sample size).
Franson's never been a great defender. He's a #5 (maybe #4 with a good partner) who should be playing most teams' #1 PP unit. It's kind of a weird combination, but it will ensure he gets overpaid. - Leeman4Gilmour
I like that he's picked up his physical game but yeah, he's a guy with a smart shot and ok passing ability but his defensive coverage is awful. |

On the flip side, Franson has had as many (and arguably more) bad games.
Ranger is good for a catastrophic mistake now and again, but at least he can stabilize and settle into a good rythym when he's on. - Leeman4Gilmour
this.
Rangers makes gaffs, so does everybody. But he's solid most of the time, and he's gotten a lot more comfortable on the PK.
plus he's nasty. He absolutely buries somebody every game. Half the time it's after the whistle |

for the season... but a significant margin.
1. Gunnar 51
2. Dion 40
3. Franson 31 - Badge
Well, to be fair, that's because Gunnar plays the PK. Dion and Franson play the PP. You're going to have to block more shots if you play the PK as opposed to the PP. |

Franson will make a dozen small mistakes during a game, while Ranger makes one or two.
But, man, when Ranger (frank)s up, he makes it count! |

After I believe. When he pushed Okposo off the puck causing the turnover, got it out then blocked a shot. - AdamFrench
I wish he had the mobility he had a couple years ago, he was an automatic getting the puck out, not so much this year. |

Gunnarsson is making a believer out of me.
A healthy Gunnarsson is the #2D we've been looking for. And he'll always be underpaid because he doesn't put up ridiculous point totals. |

actually that's not what he said. That's what a Cannucks fan would have heard him say though...

When Jeff Finger signed with TOR in 08 and we were told it was a $3.5M deal, we said total $? For four years? We were told, no, $3.5M AAV.
Old man Fletch was a moron in round 2. |

This would actually be hilarious after all the effort we went through to land BSchenn when we had Luke.
Dump Luke, pick up Brayden. Sounds good. |

That pretty much tells the story.
If Franson wasn't so valuable for his right handed shot, I'd be shopping him harder than Gardiner right now.
He'd bring more back in a trade and he's set to be overpaid. |

I doubt Phaneuf and Franson will both be here next year. Being a RFA we can keep franson then trade his rights in the summer, we need a right handed shooting defender back though |
