We're talking about a guy who hasn't taken care of his body. One of his greatest assets is his skating. The decline may start sooner than you think.
- PhillySportsGuy

For a guy that doesn't take care of his body, he sure plays a lot of minutes at a very high level.

And Cam Fowler? He's pretty damned good. Like leading one of the best teams in the NHL in ice time good
- Jsaquella

People tend to conflate point production with successful puck-moving... Fowler's a lot like Matt Carle... he doesn't have to put up any more than 30-40 pts to be extremely valuable in transition. As long as he gets the puck into the o-zone for Perry/Getz/Teemu to do their thing...

Yes, and Philly fans were clamoring to trade JVR... so not the best arguement.
- youarewrong

The dumb ones wanted to trade him. The smart ones wanted to keep him unless they got a good offer.

At age 28, it's not as if Byfuglien is going to retire next summer, so they could have him for several years, not just this year
- Jsaquella

Good point. Can't wait to watch him have a heart attack on the ice.

OK - bad thought done for the day...

Worked most of the weeknd and I'm just tired.
Good news is that was the last big push and it's all downhill from here baby!

If they could get Cam Fowler for Scott Laughton, I'd volunteer to move Fowler's stuff to Philly in my car for free

I think his body size will cut down on his productivity (i.e. bad knees) in the near future. But I'm no doctor, so I can't be sure. Just my view.

Yeah, who cares if he's good at moving the puck and puts up a ton of points.

He's fat and lazy, or at least that's what I have heard.

For a fat lazy guy, you would think his shot from the point would be muffin-like

He might not. But I doubt the decline happens in the next year or two, when you have guys like Alt, Morin, Hagg and Gostisbehere ready to start pushing for jobs.

It's also possible that he can be convinced to start taking better care of himself, to ease the decline.

He might not have been able to make the 1967 Leafs (I think they had to do 20 chin-ups or something).

And he's also an elite level offensive defenseman....which is currently the biggest need on the Flyers roster, and one that they don;t exactly have ready to step in in the system.

I've watched 5 or 6 Ducks games this year. He's really good in transition and smart with the puck.

It is. But they Flyers don't have any prospect defensemen that project to be as good offensively as Byfuglien is right now.

Okay. That's why (if I'm given the choice), I'd rather try to package him for a true, elite, young, 2-way defenseman. Problem is, there aren't many available.
