We know, but hopefully not three (3) decades like the Laffs were. And it is easy to beat a guy when you attack him from behind. BTW who was it that completed a 360 degree flip while coming to the Princess' rescue? It was totally amazing, I gave him a 9.7, but I'm Russian - IonSabres
three decades? if not winning the cup is the only measure of success than the sabres have had a pretty miserable existence |

Toronto is gonna have to eat close to half the contract to move him. Hes a decent 6/7 guy but contract sucks - Bieksa#3
If they buy him out at the end of the season, the cap hits are like this:
2014-15: $791,667
2015-16: $2,291,667
2016-17: $1,166,667
2017-18: $1,166,667
Average is $1,354,167 per season, so the retained cap hit on a trade should be lower than that, otherwise it doesn't make sense, depending on whatever asset they get back.

thanks for posting this.
unfortunately other fan bases seem to have difficulty understanding that a Leaf player COULD somehow have any value.... and what the obvious parameters of a deal would need to be for both sides. for exactly the reasons you've posted the Leafs won't be taking back much salary ... because it doesn't make sense.
Liles could help a bunch of teams in the league, and if a team like Philly can sign Streit for 5.25M for four years at his age, then Liles at 3.8 isn't as big an albatross as some blind haters would have you believe.
Heck, if he had signed with Vancouver he'd be making 4+M , simply because they pay each and every defensemen at least that much don't they?
The CAP went down, Liles was the odd man out. |

This sounds so much like Ballard 2.0. Many Canuck fans were convinced he still had trade value. He was bought out, signed with hometown Minny and is a 6/7 defenseman for them.
And at you comparing Liles to Edler, Hamhuis, Bieksa and Garrison.

I don't think I mentioned a single name other than Liles - so I guess you're drawing the comparison. I can't stomach watching the Canucks enough to make that kind of comparison.
but now that you mention it ... couldn't you replace Ballard in the above commentary with Luongo..... and because he was simply to expensive for the ownership to buyout or Gillis simply didn't have the balls to go to ownership and ask for the buyout.. the Canucks ended up dumping a top-2 or 3(I can never remember which was better) goalie in the world for a single first round pick.
Now I don't believe it was the Leaf fan base commenting on how much Luongo was worth, you know multiple high draft picks, former first rounders and top 6 players worth...
come to think of it... who was coming up with those player evaluations?
see - i said all that without a single laughing head |

The Luongo situation isn't even close to the same, his okay was good enough to have value and his cap hit is decent, it's all about length. Ballard and Liles are decent depth defensemen who have declined and both were being overpaid with bad cap hits. I'm not saying he's untradeable, but as pointed out above with a regular buyout only costing the Leafs around 1.5 per, they'd be stupid to eat more than that of his cap hit in a trade, which makes it hard to deal him unless your giving up a somewhat decent pick/prospect with him or taking on a player that's not playing up to his cap hit on another team. I think that's fair to say.

Unless the Hurricanes send a defenseman back to TO or move one out in a separate deal, don't see this happening. |

There seems to be a healthy trade relationship between the Leafs and Canes. So there's probably something up |

For sure he is over paid. But the market for half decent dmen that can move the puck is really inflated. Even at that, is contract it is to high. But I don't think 50% to high.
But maybe if I knew more about hockey I'd be running a team compared to posting on a msg board. - 50 Mission Cap
It was always a ridiculous contract. Colorado gave him to us for a 2nd rounder. |

Doubt they move a d man. As mentioned earlier it will be for a 5th or 6th rounder or no name prospect and leafs eat about 2 mill per on the contract - Bieksa#3
If that's the case then there's no point. If we're gonna keep 2m on our Cap and only get back a no name prospect then he can rot on the Marlies. |
