Star Wars is actually about nature versus technology. Evil things are personified as being high tech and metallic; Darth Vader is easily recognizable as the evil creature who is "more machine than man, twisted and evil". But who said that? Oni Wan Kenobi.

Obi Wan lives in solitude in the desert, in a rudimentary hut (like another Jedi master). He specifically says he's never owned a droid. He hates the new blaster weapons and idolizes an "elegant weapon from a more civilized age." He emphasizes feeling over technology.

Luke is caught in the middle somewhere. He has a droid, R2-D2 who is his closes companion, like a loyal dog. He is an expert pilot and a novice mechanic. He uses machines without becoming them.

On the way to destroying the Death Star, Luke is robbed of his friendly machine and must use the full potential of his humanity to defeat... The biggest machine ever created. (With a lot of visual symbolism of insemination but I think that's probably a whooole other can of worms)

If that's not enough, Luke is literally turned into a cyborg at the end of Empire, after losing his hand.

All this is compounded in the final act of Return of the Jedi when Luke is about to kill Vader, looks at his mechanical hand and realizes he is becoming a machine (notice how much more stiff and cold he was in Return of the Jedi? That wasn't wooden acting, it was part of his character arc) And Vader, despite being mostly machine, saves Luke in the end.

But here's the thing: This whole story has been challenging Obi-Wan and Yoda who hate technology and only use it when there's no other choice. (They especially dislike droids, although Yoda is less passive-aggressive about it) Obi-Wan asserts that Darth Vader is evil through and through, because he is more machine than man. He was wrong. Vader's humanity was suppressed, not destroyed. And the Emperor, the most evil character, is purely organic, and also purely savage and animalistic - the worst distortion of Obi-Wan's nature worshipping.

In the end Luke becomes the perfect synthesis of both these arguments. He is a creature of the new age, forged by soul and metal together.

Here's the funny thing...

I love Chris Nolan. I mention the fact that I doze off after 2 hours because I have the attention span of a housefly and Asp rips on me whilst praising Nolan (even though I wasn't knocking Nolan).
