Here's a wild thought. If overtime ends with no score, award the team with greater chances in OT the extra point. Not shots, which can be pointless perimeter ones, but actual chances. Would force teams to be more aggressive and may make for a more spirited overtime. Also rewards teams by actually using part of the game as tie-breaker.

Pay 80$ for nosebleed seats for this game. A lot of Flyer fans in the crowd, hope it was visible on the telecast.

Few notes.

Goaltending:
-Flyers may have truly found a keeper in Mason. Kept them in the game all night long.

Offense:
-I would say that things are starting to look better, the passing in particular I think is much better than earlier in the season.

Defense:
-Overall as a group I thought they did well, but that bottom pairing killed them. Any time Schenn-Guss were on the ice, it gave momentum to the jets. Guss has a long way to go if he wants to be an NHL regular, he gets outworked down low far too easily, and is slow with his reads.

Luke Schenn. Sigh. I thought from watching it live he had a bad game along with Guss. The lack of speed is really clear and the other teams feasts when he is on the ice.

Coaching:
What lost the game to a big degree imo. Its a moronic move to have Timonen, who has done nothing all season as your "must score" shooter. I understand playing solid defensively, but this team under Berube continues to try and sit back consistently. Its a joke of a way to play, and we all knew it would cost them. There needs to be more balance, not just so focused on sitting back, when is a growing trend I attribute to coaching.

Lastly, and this goes along with coaching, I dont know for sure what the minutes were tonight, but it seemed like the line of Coots was out there continously. Now I understand Berube is trying to match up, but we all know that line isnt going to be great in terms of offensive production. Focusing so much on "shutting down" the other team is foolish imo.

At the end of it, they played not to lose imo, and in this league, thats exactly how you often do end up on the wrong side of the win chart.

not a bad idea ... but who decides chances? Isn't that the same people who count hits, which always seem to favor the home team?

Guys, if you don't like the shootout, write a letter to Gary Bettman....otherwise realize complaining about something you have no control over is meaningless.

good summary.

I thought L Schenn looked pretty good on tv. And, yeah, Berube with a brain cloud by having Timo in the shoot out.

they did sit back ... but they were also obviously tired after 3 games in 4 nights. I can't get too angry tonight, considering we got 5 of a possible 6 points on this road trip.

The shootout will stay. Its a part of the game, and the Flyers have sucked at it for years. Whether its practicing it more, I dont know, but I do think they have to look at that.

Its also batpoop stupid to send out an obviously gassed Timonen on the shootout, as your "must score" shooter, when he hasnt done poop all season. That is on Berube.

The bigger concern is this constant sitting back bullpoop. They only started playing again when the game was tied, and in OT.

i think timonen was in the FAN 590 saying it's always been his dream to take a shoot out attempt

The sitting back is a growing trend, and if not for a fluke goal by Hartnell, that game goes ugly.

They constantly sit back, and it makes for (frank)ing boring hockey. Much more so in person.

Regarding Luke Schenn, and the whole team actually, the lack of speed is really evident live. I know they were gassed, but there are a small group of guys on this team that have above average skating. That whole 3rd pairing, which both guys contributed to, was just horrific though. Slow skating, slow reads, and outworked down low.

If it was clearly obvious Lava had the d-men making risky pinches, and the team playing too run and gun.

Its just as obvious that Berube is having them sit back, and play ultra conservative. With or without the lead.

Its stupid, and such a 1 sided approach will not work. It was clearly evident against Pittsburgh and they got away with it. It cost them tonight.

Yes, chances are very subjective. We could have impartial NHL scorers present for overtime or even judge chances from war room in Toronto.

At least you saw then while they're getting their collective games together. I was at that 5-2 Detroit game. The highlight of my evening was bringing a date that only had one thing in mind and knew nothing about Hockey. Hartnell and Lecavalier were hurt the night before too.

I'll be at the next game in Detroit and the one in Columbus.

My record is 0-2 as of now.

First game I saw them was Pronger's last played I believe. Tonight was a bit of a heartbreak because Mason was giving them a chance all night long, even in the shootout.

I don't think Berube is a fresh enough voice in the locker room. Just more of the same. He's been on the bench since John Stevens was hired. There is nothing creche and brand new about him.

Funny how some on this site make fun of someone's size....buff was the best player on the ice tonite with no exceptions...as for timo taking a penalty shot....he has done well in the past, so I'm sure the coaches hav numbers from the past and from practices as far as who to use in thos spots....I want the fat man on this team!!!

I'm 5-8-1

This includes a couple preseason games and that 1 isn't a loss in OT. It's a bloody tie.
