The NHL had ties for nearly 100 years.

They still have ties. The Jets didn't win the hockey game. They tied the hockey game, 2-2. They won the shootout. Not a hockey game.

- Jsaquella

it hurts more seeing your team lose in a shoot out that OT or regular because what they lost in was a joke

I'll disagree. I have no problem rewarding a team sometimes who is more adept at putting the puck in the back of the net off of pure skill.
- Just5

It's not pure skill. It's a gimmick. The sport has defense, hitting, passing.

It'd be like deciding a NBA game by playing H-O-R-S-E. To me, it's more skillful to be able to score when you have to beat team defense, as well as a goalie.

Those who b*tch about the shootout have to ask themselves are they okay with going to a game knowing a game could end in a tie if they took away the shootout. I believe the older guys grew up watching hockey that way but nothing gets solved when they do end that way. In a non playoff game, you can't have these guys go forever. My first time ever seeing the Flyers play live was back in 2002 against Toronto and it ended 1-1. OT was exciting but once you walked away without a winner, just felt empty. Excited to see my first Flyers game but empty.
- Schenn2shine

I would ... absolutely. It's a 1000 times better (in my opinion) to end a hard fought game in a tie, then to end a hard fought game with a gimmick to decide who gets another point.

And I would say that even if the Flyers were great at shoot outs. I just freaking hate them.

The dancing was shameful. Even Giroux got on Brayden Schenn's case after Schenn scored his first goal ever at the Winter Classic. Buff is a vet.
- Schenn2shine

Agreed S2S I hate that. Act like you've been there before and save the celebrations like that for playoff OT

I would've rather the used another dman before Kimmo, for some reason i get the hunch that Gus would be pretty good at these things. Oh well, not a great ending to a great roadtrip but if you had told me at the start of if that they were going to get 5 out of 6 points i would laughed in your face endlessly.

Yeah they do. But many games decided off of a puck going off someones ass or some guys skate blade. I have no idea why people would get upset over a so called "skills" competition.
- Just5

Because it's not playing the sport to decide the outcome of the game.

Pretty simple, actually.

Um

That's exactly the point.

You play the game to win the game.

Like I said earlier. World War 3 isn't going to be decided by skeet shooting.

In non playoff games, if 2 teams tie, then they tie. End of story.

4v4 for 10 mins. It'll generate plenty of chances, and if none go in, it's a tie.

Sure it's like kissin your sister, but it's better than deciding who wins WWIII by skeet shooting

- Giroux_Is_God

I'm not getting into this, I simply disagree. If I'm coaching the Flyers and we have another game tomorrow night and have a 10 over period that solves nothing, I'm pissed that my players put in the extra energy the night before and tired in tomorrow night's game. Love or hate the shootout, it saves energy and you don't have to kiss your sister at all.

that's basically all it does ... it saves energy, and I suppose it entertains (some) fans.

Valid points, but to which I say....does adding 5 more mins of 4v4 really kill the players that much? That's like an extra shift and a half for the players that coaches roll out in OT ya know?

can we win an OT or SO for once? JfC.

5 minutes away from winning the game in regulation. more blown 3rd period points. cripes this pisses me off.

Well than I suggest the Flyers talk strategy with the other team's coach to stand there for 65 minutes and earn one point a game for doing nothing. This way they don't have to bust their assessment for nothing out there.

Pisses me off too but I'm willing to give them a pass here. Not necessarily making excuses, but more so being content with the result

each team ALREADY has a point.

they should have to bust their ass to get ANOTHER point.

I would think playing 60 minutes kills the players and than they sometimes have to play 60 minutes the next night, plus practice schedules and possible jet lag.

Disappointed by tonight, but overall, it's been a good trip.

You missed my point....I was saying- compared to how things stand today, where they play 4v4 for 5 mins then SO- does changing it to a 10 minute OT period with no shootout really waste that much more energy? Tie or not.

Why? They get no points if there is no tie breaker. Both sides can shake hands and say good night. If I go out with a friend and I buy the first round, then after that first round he buys the next. Then we go home, we split even. For both sides, it has to be forth while. A game ending in a tie really isn't worth while.

Of course it does. You add time to the clock, you put in more energy. I'm sure people who work doing hard labour can tell you that.

Well, tonight, the game did end in a tie. The Flyers and Jets each scored 2 goals and when they stopped playing hockey, it was tied 2-2.

Then they had a skills competition, which the Jets won, 2-1. But the skills competition lacked most of the basic elements of the sport of hockey, so the hockey game ended in a tie.

The NHL has made it the sport like it or not. Just like the nfl makes kickers doing field goals and extra points, part of the sport.
