Hawks said for next generation of young players. since that they waived Ryan Stanton (who is having a great year in vancouver) and traded Olson and Hayes. and have kept Roszival and Handzius and acquired Versteeg. Coach Q likes old guys

Don't look now.
Rozsival stabilized the 3rd pairing in '13 much like Sopel/Boynton did in '10, allowing Keith to have a lower TOI and not burn out. Helped Leddy too.
Handzus provided an option at 2C and allowed Sharp to play 1L/2L. This also allowed Kruger to stay on the 3rd line with Frolik and lead a great PK, through the '13 cup championship.
Versteeg at $4.4M would not be wise, even if the 'Hawks could manage the cap, which this year they could not. But at $2.2M for 3 years it's OK. Not much given up and if he can play 3-zones better than he did in '10, all the better.
Not sure how you can arrive at that conclusion if you look at the big picture.
Oh, BTW some of the next gen players that will really help them starting, say in '15-'16 are Danault, Teravainen, McNeill, Clendening and Nordstrom.
