Can somebody please explain to me why anyone would bring up the Emery/Holtby thing when discussing protecting goalies from what Kadri did last night.

They just can't let this Emery thing go up there as a collective media.

I wonder if Heeter has any NHL backup potential. I have only seen him in a few camps.

He'll be getting shut outs for the Kings in about 30 days.

Rinaldo had 69 points in 185 games in the OHL. Goulbourne has to this point 51 in 159. Of course that said, his projected numbers this year will probably mean he will end up with more points than Rinaldo but Rinaldo was also a 6th rounder
- nastyflyergirl

True, but Goldilocks' first 18 games were worthless, and he actually has been showing improvement offensively year by year. I just hope he doesn't forget what his ticket to the NHL is and think he's the next Wayne Gretzky, or even the next Matt Read.

3. Disagree...a bit...I don't think this was the same "turtle" 3rd period...normally they spend a ton of time chasing the puck in thier own end, last night they didn't. i agree they did not press, but they spent a ton of time on the neutral zone, not chasing the puck in thier own zone, which is what usually happens, pitt could never keep the puck in the zone and set up, and for me, that is completely different...they were actually able to move the puck around and then clear it..
- jw98

In the 3rd, they had very active sticks in the neutral zone. I heard a stat that they didn't allow a SOG over the last 7 1/2 minutes or something like that. They were getting pucks in deep and getting in on the forecheck. When you're playing with a lead against a team like the Penguins, who have a good transition game, that's what you want to do. Get cute with it when they institute a press and you've got odd man rushes all period long. The best way to negate that is to make them go 200 feet and fight for every inch of the ice.
- jmatchett383

Good points...I was worried when I saw them playing "not to lose" style, with the defensive/protect the lead gameplan late...so often, when doing so previously, they had little to no chance of following up a dump with effective pressure in the neutral zone...nor would they have enough battle in the D zone to effectively thwart opposing attacks in the waning minutes...with the more disciplined and defensive scheme under Berube it seems they are more capable of defending leads with this strategy...like you might see from teams like say, Detroit, when in that position. I'm not always a fan of the defensive shell, but if the defense is good enough, it can work just fine.

As long as everyone's on board and the energy level remains high, it's very effective. It's when players start deviating or lose their legs that it goes out the door.

Wow, that took a lot of faith by Homer in Coby being able to rebound from what seemed like a significant regression in order not to take that offer imo...Coburns improved play in the past several games seems be validating that decision.

B Coburn 28+ minutes last night

I don't even want to think about what the D looks like with Hal Gill in there and no Coburn

They are using Coburn as their #1 guy, and he has been pretty good

how many 2nd rounders will bust and not make it?

Somewhere around 70-80% A lot who do make it will be on the bottom-6 forward/6-7th defenseman variety.

i still can't believe I've seen the forwards in O&B actually play defense for 2 straight games.
- moylander

I've been saying for years now how you can tell when the team is on their game by how good the backchecking (by the forwards) is...more often than not, they are rewarded for those efforts.

Isn't it amazing how you magically generate offensive if the forwards come back in the zone to get the puck as opposed to just waiting for the D to give it to them at center ice?

We have a healthy Meszaros all set to QB their PP. 3rd rounder would get it done. It's nice actually having options on defense for once.

I hear you...but I was kind losing faith in the big guy. There's no question his game had been in decline...some said he was asked to be somethnig he's not, or given too many minutes...some said it was that puck to the face from Gill a few yrs back...maybe Gill finally made amends and he was able to snap out of it.

Whatever it was I saw a distinct improvement in Coby over the last 5 games or so...more confidence better puck moving, more quickness and decisiveness, a bit more snarl...keep it up Coby! But 3 (likely to be) high 2nd rounders for the player Coburn was past season or two seemed like a fairly decent offer...if Mac made one of them a 1st it probably would have been a deal.

I like Coburn, but if the deal was a 1st and 2 2nds, I'd do it.

Maybe we can eat some salary and bump it to one of those 2nds he wanted to so desperately rid himself of

FWIW, here is what those 3 2nd rounders were used on:
http://www.hockeydb.com/i...s/pdisplay.php?pid=160415
http://www.hockeydb.com/i...s/pdisplay.php?pid=130509
http://www.hockeydb.com/i...s/pdisplay.php?pid=129676

Not saying that's what the Flyers would have done, but those were the 3 2nd rounders Edmonton had going into this draft.

That was an off-season offer, if they still wanted Coburn the price would likely go up for the Oilers.
