We aren't pretending anything.

We have the impression that even with top notch 2 replacement players that this team would be far from an above avg team.

How is that exactly? Kev does have point here. If you can push Markov to be a #3 and really get a top guy to help score goals, this team becomes a lot better in the regular season, and then once the playoffs come. All bets are off. We all know that.

It is evident that the Habs do not have a Natural Goal Scorer, how many of these past few games that they were competing in could they have won if they had that guy. ? It is clear that as they move forward, they cannot keep going with small players, but they aren't that far off either.

What I suggested were not tweaks. How can you find a top line player and a top pairing D and call that a tweak? It's a big deal and hard to find. One could be had on the FA market with the amount of money being freed up by Gionta-Bouillon-Murray this summer. (spend the $ of the cap going up on Subban and Eller)

And going back to the original post, my point was that the two players is what they would need to be above average but they won't get it because they'll never have the money freed up to buy them both and they are always just slightly too good to go get said player via the draft. They would have needed a second tank job last year and instead finished second and drafted McCarron.
