Great win. I liked the hunger for the puck from every line. I though L. Schenn continued to struggle.

Disagree with your disagreement, lol. Defensively, Downie made at least two backchecking plays where he raced back and blocked potentially dangerous shots. He also picked off a pass or two...offensively, he made some nice, skilled passes and did well in battles. He may not be a speedster, but he more or less makes up for it through hard work and determination.

He just looked a little rusty at times really. Nothing too bad, just looked like a guy who had only played 10 minutes with his team before that game. He did make a few good plays and he worked hard. He also seemed to get better as the game went on. If (and this is always the big "IF" with guys like him) he can avoid the stupidity of his early years, he should be fine, and a nice addition to the team.

I guess I just don't see it. The guy has had 1 good season, 1 okay season (during which he was traded), has been injury prone as much as the much-maligned Meszaros, yet he was the answer. I guess if all you want is a 3rd liner who you can stick out there to be solid positionally and chip in 7-10 goals, he's your man. He just came in and this place erupted like he was the answer to our scoring woes, and I don't think he has true NHL top-6 scoring ability.
- jmatchett383

He's a pass first guy, so I wouldn't necessarily focus on goals with Donwie...the things he does best are win puck battles and dish pucks to his mates in good positions to score. To give you an idea of his production, in his last 30+ games, he's produced at a 52 point (full season) pace. He's not "the answer", and I don't think anyone thinks he is, but he's a distinct upgrade in offensive skill over Talbot with a similar work ethic. Grit, skill, hard work... that's the stuff a true Flyer is made of.

yes daigle and luke schenn
- Just5

I'll contend Hugh Jessiman is also worse, taken 12th overall in 2005 and has played 2 NHL games in 2010-11 season for Florida. Now playing in KHL.

Eventually he'll use the Dartmouth degree.

Quite the purge going on in Buffalo.

Ted Nolan in as coach and LaFontaine in as GM, supposedly.

- opeth_pa

LaFontaine just pitching in while running GM search, working with Asst GM in place.

No luck there. It's only on NBC - I'm not showing that comcast has it at all...
And the NBC announcers are overwhelmingly Penguin friendly...
Sigh.

Yeah that Crosby sucks chant really seems to get to him, huh? so stupid
- nastyflyergirl

Watch the rivalry special on Flyers v Pens before tonight's game on NBCSports. It was really good. And Sid talks about the glove incident and how he'd have been better off trying to score a goal than starting that stuff. They spend a bit of time on The Shift, too. It's pretty cool.

Anyone see NHL Rivals last night on NBC Sports. Flyers vs Pens for tonights game.... Man that got me pumped. Pitt couldnt in a single game in Philly for 30 some years... not until 1989. Domination. And took you through that, the Lemieux years, the Lindros years with Lemieux passing the tourch, then the Crosby years, starting with the Hatcher moments and shows the growing hatred, finishing with "the shift". Just great. Makes me excited for tonights game, and makes me want to see some inspired hockey.

Should make the players watch it on the plane trip to Pit.

Most encouraging thing about last night was the chemistry between G, Voracek and Hartnell. Yes, Ottawa's defense is hideous, but those three looked completely different in just about every way last night and I think that's the key. If that line can build off of last night's effort and chemistry, a significant portion of the offensive issues can be put to bed
- mcefalu

it also will take a ton of pressure off b schenn and couts (which they can use) to have a top line that can play like a top line.

Loved what Downie brought last night. I chalk some of the poor plays he made to the cage, but looked real good IMO. Might want to try him on 2nd line with Vinny next. We can call it the "I can't see you" line...

Honestly speaking I can't stand the guy cause he is on a rival team but I admire him as a hockey player a lot. He is one of the most gifted players in the world but doesn't get by on his talent alone. he is one of the hardest workers who has a burning desire to win as well and I think that is what makes him an elite player.

yuck praising him so much makes me feel like I need to scrub away the scum

I literally cringe every time I hear it. its ridiculous. Boo ok, but the sucks chant is just dumb
- nastyflyergirl

He does suck on principle, though. Because he is a Penguin first. Because he is a whiny granny-faced weenie second.

And yeah, nfg, all that's true, but HATE THE FACE!

Sorry, yes. After carter and before Richards. NYR fans at the time were not happy. And I remember he was known as Huge Specimen.

Small side note. I worked for his dad for 18 mos here. The dad is brilliant.

Heard on another site the Flyers are actively shopping Meszaros and L.Schenn. I know Mez was a given, but the L.Schenn was Spec until heard this.....

Do the Schenns, and Laughton get you Weber?

Flyers D has looked very bad at times this year. Much like Ottawa's D looked pretty bad last night. I think the takeaway here is that when your team is getting outworked on every level (as the Flyers did to the Sens last night), your D will tend to look worse than it really is.

If the team plays the majority of their games the way they did last night, the Flyers' D will not be an issue. If they have to spend entire periods in their own end because the Flyers have no o-zone time and no puck possession, then they will be exposed. This is true of most teams, and perhaps even more so for the Flyers since they're not the most mobile group ever assembled.

- BringBack25

i thought last night was the first game in a couple years that the FORWARDS actually played tremendous defense. All of them contributed.

They are the worst by far, followed not too far behind by Jack Edwards. Edwards isn't as obnoxious, but good god does he love the Bruins, Chara and Lucic in particular. I've never heard a play by play guy use "fanny" and "reach around" more than Jack Edwards in their game calling
