I think Downie will help bring the Flyers uppie and have to give Homer credit so far for the Mason trade.

I'm amazed that Tampa Bay is now in its 21st season and, even with a Stanley Cup and one of the most exciting (now injured) players in the game, they still can't a following yet have not been relocated.

My apologies but Downie's skating has always needed work but I wouldn't say it's made him ineffective because that area of his game hasn't changed since his first stint here. I'm actually surprised the avalanche traded him.
- Schenn2shine

I guess I just don't see it. The guy has had 1 good season, 1 okay season (during which he was traded), has been injury prone as much as the much-maligned Meszaros, yet he was the answer. I guess if all you want is a 3rd liner who you can stick out there to be solid positionally and chip in 7-10 goals, he's your man. He just came in and this place erupted like he was the answer to our scoring woes, and I don't think he has true NHL top-6 scoring ability.

Well, at least they didn't blow a whole bunch of taxpayer money on a new stadium to go with a team revitalization effort that failed in less than a season. Although if they did, they'd have much more colorful uniforms.

I'll admit...for the $7 tickets and free jersey, I was tempted to buy season tickets. I could probably get $30 for the jersey, and if I could sell the tickets for an average of $7, you're making money.

I think calling him "the answer" is rather overstating it, no? I didn't interpret it as such, anyways.

I like the Flyers top three lines, I hope Berube doesn't soon feel the need to suddenly shuffle them.

Quite the purge going on in Buffalo.

Ted Nolan in as coach and LaFontaine in as GM, supposedly.

I do like that line. Read had several chances and Downey had his chances too. I wish Couturier would shoot the puck more instead of constantly looking to pass. He did his job though based on the Spezza/Turris lines having a very quiet night.
- PhillySportsGuy

He made an awful blind pass backwards instead of shooting that Clement commented on at the time.

But overall his offensive play was encouraging. His line also shut down Spezza and Ryan.

I don't either, and have never really liked Downie because of his dumb plays and dirty plays, but right now I think he's a great fit on the third line with Coots and Read.

Pens Flyers is always full of rivalry and battles after each stoppage in play. Pens due for a win, although Flyers beating a good Ottawa team shows progress.

Team health and continuity wins games. Pens have major defensive gaps with Martin and Scuderi out, but Philly D is poor at best.

It would be a good game to watch.

- allaboutpens

Honestly.. this isn't a good Ottawa team.. their wins could have gone the exact same way at this game did.

They get hemmed in their zone every game, are outshot out powerplayed and only hot goaltending has allowed them their points in the standings.

I would hazard to say that the Detroit win was the only convincing one despite the scoreboards..

(Might be a little down after such a garbage effort last night)

I wish someone would remind Couturier that he has a wicked wrist shot, which he should be using so much more

Someone call the body snatchers and tell them we don't want the old team back!
They looked awesome last night.
The fiancee acually asked me what it did to our rankings - which cracks me up cuz it was only 1 game. But if we play like that all the time (even most of the time) this is a play-off team.

Definitely agree Downie is a great fit with Read and Coots. The guy isn't going to win all the races for the puck, but let's at least give him a couple games to get his endurance and skating legs back before we knock on his speed too much

I haven't notice anyone say Steve Downie is the answer to the Flyers problems but I do see how he's a good fit. Example, many including myself believed Gagne would be re-signed and would be the perfect compliment to the third line. Suddenly talks of Dan Cleary surface. So much talk of much needed grit on that third line was the reason to why Gagne wasn't resigned and Gagne's inability to stay healthy. Fast forward to today, Hartnell, Lecavalier and Downie cannot seem to stay healthy. Grossmann himself has a track record of being injury prone. I still feel we should have resigned Gagne but Downie does seem to be a better compliment to the third line and he can definitely play on all three lines, at all three forward position. Downie is a good pick up by Homer. Downie's age and skill only adds to the core of this team.

If we're gonna lose as much as we have, at least do so with our best players in a position to succeed. I couldn't believe at one point Raffl, Giroux and Lecavalier was our top line before trying a number of other things. My biggest worry affter already firing Laviolette and trading Talbot that more players would get traded. In fact it was and still is a fear. I love this group and I don't wanna see anyone else moved. Not a single player.

Edit

That's a lie, I want Pronger and meszaros' contracts to expire.

Disagree. I noticed him a few times, but for the most part he looked like a little kid who wasn't fast enough to make an offensive or defensive play.
- jmatchett383

I thought he looked a little lost out there at times. Held the puck a little too long once or twice. Looked like he might not quite have his legs back yet too - looked a little slow here and there. But considering he's played only 10 minutes with this team before tonight I'm not too concerned. I still think he's an upgrade over Talbot in everything except the PK.
