Meh, to me, Grossmann is very expendable. I don't like his contract and despite his physical play and shot blocking ability, he lacks Coburn's overall skills and Meszaros' offensive ability.
- Jsaquella

Agreed, I'd be very open to trading Grossmann.

Yeah, if I'm giving up Couturier as part of the package, I want Eberle instead of Yakupov.

Simmonds + Grossmann and maybe a pick is all I would offer for Eberle. Not interested in Yakupov.

And I don't think Mesazros has offensive ability anymore.

I'd offer a lot for Eberle. I think he and Giroux together would be lethal.

Agreed. But of the 2, Johnson or Staal, who would you have taken?
- jmatchett383

Staal.

I think Meszaros is probably another six months from being fully healed. That's an injury that usually takes a season before it really is in the past.

As a goalie, I'm not surprised you'll take the better shot blocker.
That said, he's probably been the most consistent defenseman this year, although Coburn has been their best, followed by Streit/Grossmann, depending on what you're looking for.

Well, when they're all in their 70s, I doubt Coburn/Meszaros will have the dominant offensive flair they have now, but Grossmann could still use that big frame to flail about and block a shot.

Perhaps, but he won't be in Philly by that time. Timonen and Gill are also very unlikely to be back here next season.

Before making any trades or signings next year's defense looks like.

I'd be (somewhat) tempted to bring him back at a 1-year, low salary deal (like $1.2-$1.5M) if he'd take it. But he'd have to show me SOMETHING by the end of the year. He's looked better, but better than awful is still bad. If he shows some offensive pop and some of his physical play of the past when he gets his minutes, I'd take a low risk gamble on him.

I'd think Lauridsen has the inside track on that bottom pairing spot, simply because of his experience. Although Alt looked very good in the preseason.

But, judging by the organization's patience with player development in the past, I expect Hagg, Morin, Alt, and Gostisbehere to all be on the roster next year.

Brad Marsh has a wonderful remembrance of Pelle today in the top section of HB. Erik Marsh is in the process of writing one of his own.

And no offense, but I prefer Marsh's piece over yours today. Yours angers me.

When Mez is right physically, he's pretty good.

When he's not right physically or if his game is off, he makes me want to punch a wall he's so bad.

Grossmann does what he does quite well and quite consistently, IMO. Whether those skills are valued or, in the case of this Flyers team, redundant, is another story.

That's the other factor in my assessment of Grossmann. He's redundant and less skilled than the others. This team needs more skill. I won;t be upset if any of the defensemen are traded, TBH

Why Streit?

Why not give them Mez if we're doing the "bad contract for bad contract" thing?

Quick poll to throw out here:

Everyone always point to the 2006 draft as a reason why you never take a defenseman first overall. The big dilemma was deciding between Erik Johnson and Jordan Staal as the first overall. Although picks 3-5 were probably all better (Toews, Backstrom, Kessel) and there were some good picks further down (Giroux, Grabner, Nodl), who would you take right now between those 2? Johnson's been considered a bust as a #1 which is fair, but I've been a fan and would actually take him, right now, over J Staal. How about you guys?

- jmatchett383

I'd take Johnson over Staal every day of the week... neither have really put up the level of offensive production that were expected out of them, but Johnson's damned steady on both sides of the puck and he's going to be on the ice more than Staal just by virtue of his position.

If they redrafted the whole thing, Backstrom and Toews would fight it out for #1, and G would be in the top-5 for sure.

Because the Meszaros bad contract ends in about 9 months, while Streit lasts until 2017...of course that totally ignores the logic of a team needing defense help trading for a solely offensive defenseman in Streit.

Let's hope MacT's like Homer and he'll make an acquisition based on the player torching his team in a single-game sample?
