As much as I bemoan the signing I really hope yesterday giroux gets on track to proving me wrong about him. It was only Edmonton but they put away a team they're supposed to which is a good thing.

Just wanna take this time to say I ha e been pleasantly surprised with Steve mason. I never thought when we traded bob for him this would turn out the way it did. That trade right there might actually save this season and homer. We'll see.

- JoeRussomanno

The interesting thing of it is that Bob has struggled this year for CBJ and, to me, Mason has been lights out. I would say he's our MVP so far. If he plays all year like this, I am more than happy to sign him to a 3 or 4 year contract. It really looks like he's confident and that Reese has helped his game. If we could have scored even just a bit more, his record would be great.

cool! i get that part about contagiousness of both good annd bad play but so rarely is it that everyone gets "sick" at the same time
- hogweed

True though it does occasionally happen. However when it happens at the start of the season, it really stands out!

Florida sends Jakob Markstrom to the AHL...kid has not played very well for them.
- Jsaquella

Guess it's all Timmy Tom now?

Stupid move v2.0. I thought it was brainless when they signed Thomas as their starter. Markstrom is ready. They weren't going anywhere....let the kid play not some 40 year old

If the flyers squeak into the Dance, Mason should win the Vezina. Not a joke.

re the Phantoms
Could you comment a bit about Cal Heeter? His early season numbers are fantastic, is he a legit prospect?

- BiggE

I have no faith in developing goalies. Bobs was the best goalie prospect we've had in a long time and we dumped him. Still doesn't make sense to me.

I'm not sold he's NHL ready. Granted he plays behind a horrible team, but his numbers are horrific. 1-5-3, 3.36 GAA and a paltry .877 Save %

They had a ton of $$ tied up in Bryz and Bobrovsky was, essentially, the highest paid back up goalie in the NHL.

So, it makes total business sense why they dumped.

The problem is, they made an error in judging hockey talent.

How doesn't it make sense.

They had a choice- Bryz or Bob. Bryz had the big contract and they decided that this was going to be Bryz's team. They chose Bryzgalov and got a pretty good haul from the Jackets for Bob. No I don't necessarily agree with the trade but it made sense from the Flyers perspective.

We won't know that for a year or two. Looked great last season but let's see how bob plays over the next 2-3 seasons. Maybe the flyers end up lucky in the end that they went through the Bryz debacle if it landed us mason and he ends up panning out to be a really solid goalie for the long run.

Even Business wise it doesn't make sense. He was an asset who hadn't even touched his potential. That trade was pointless when you have players like Jody Shelley on your team!

Well, not really. They knew they had a good young goalie, who they unearthed and signed.

But Snider's declaration about goalies after Laviolette's asinine juggling act in the 2011 playoffs forced the issue.

After signing a guy to a huge contract, Bob was in limbo. He was a RFA, wasn't going to see a ton of time and was seen as a potential jumper to the KHL. Had the new CBA been in place when they traded Bob, perhaps they don't, knowing they had an out with Bryzgalov.

Remember, at the time of the trade, there was no way to get out of the Bryzgalov deal without cap ramifications.

Played really well last year though.... I dunno I'm just glad I can look at other teams' goalie problems and not worry about our's for once

Well, Mason has been very good thus far...I'm not 100% sold on him yet, but I'd definitely be OK if they extended him now for a short term(no more than 3 years/$3mm or so a year), because I think he's earned it.

Entirely possibly Markstrom's having a sophomore slump. Pelle Lindbergh had a great rookie year, and got sent to the AHL for a period of his second year, then came back and won the Vezina & back stopped the Flyers to the SCF in his 3rd year

2nd round pick and 2 4th rounders is a good haul?

Would you accept that for Brayden Schenn?

Literally for my whole life. I don't remember enough of Hextall's second stint to say that we actually had a reliable goalie at that point

Sometimes I wish Bryz would shut his mouth sometimes.. So Philly has never had goalies? Hexy Bernie Pelle? What a tit.

No I wouldn't, because I think Schenn has a higher upside than Bob for their respective positions? Granted this is pure speculation, but I'd say most other NHL GMs do too.

Correct, which is why it made business sense at the time.

Bob was the highest paid back up in the league at the time. If you were giving Bryz that much money to be "the guy", Bob was a luxury at the time.

And the CBA did not allow for compliance buyouts at the time, which is why they felt they were "pot committed" to Bryz.
