but we took a marginally small step back in team defence, a fairly big step back in team toughness and willingness to engage. but all of that can be understood in the big picture, even if we did undersell smid.

The return on Smid seems like a headscratcher. Hopefully the goalie turns into a capable NHL backstop.

As for Bryz, seems like weird timing. Why not do this 6 or 7 games ago when there was still a chance to salvage the season? We had the cap space...

The goalie is a hell of a lot better than Bunz and Roy were at when they became pro from junior so I say thats an upgrade.

He's not a bad goalie. Philly destroys goalie there is no rhyme or reason they just kill them. Also Bryz wasn't the problem there, wasn't great either, but their d has been absolute garbage since Pronger got injured. I think he's going to surprise a lot of people as for the ones who say he messed in the head he's a goalie go back and and read any biography on goalies they are alllllllll messed and have really weird tweaks about them.

Smid later in the year to a playoff team would have yielded a better return. If that goalie the Oilers got was really that good don't you think the team with worse goaltending than the Oilers would have kept him. Cloutier, Weekes and Auld were all goalies of the future at some point. No pressure kid.

This is a disaster signing by the Oilers. They need veteran leadership to help teach the kids so what do they do? They bring in a complete wing nut who will do absolutely nothing to fill this need. I don't care if he wins 80% of his games. He does not improve the culture of this club and does not deserve to be an Oiler and play for a Canadian team.

Every player cannot be untouchable on the Oilers. They have deal one of Hall, Eberle or Gagner. I don't even know how Yak is in this discussion because he's done jack shiite and might be a bust. I wouldn't trade Hall so that leaves Eberle and Gagner as the two best assets to bring back talent. Eberle's contract will scare teams so that leaves Gagner who might turn out to be the most complete of them all one day. It's a risk they have to take.
