Yup. Funny how EVERYONE seems to think the Flyers D has been the issue. It hasn't been, at all. It's their inability score. - Flyers_V88
While true, they're kind of in a bad place. Timonen and Meszaros are done after this year (along with Gill). Schenn may not ever pan out. Morin/Hagg/Ghost are 2+ years away. It would be nice to get a young yet established puck moving defenseman (think Brodin-esque) for the next few years. |

So then why do when I talk to Philly fans they say the main areas of concerns and need is defense?
Both teams have high profile forwards. This just seesm odd to me. - ImThatGuy
Because there is this mis-conception that the Flyers' offensive problems stems from their inability to move the puck effectively. While this may be true to some small extent, it's not the issue. The Flyers just aren't scoring or generating many chances. The team is life-less offensively. |

Agree fully, just saying that the reason we're not winning is not because our D is too porous or something. |

lol, thanks. All obviously highly, highly theoretical, but I think there is legit traction here. Both teams are in need of some help in certain areas, so it's very possible something comes from this, who knows?
As for option A), the rationale is that Edmonton already has the offensive talent to win, they just need to tighten up defensively, and I figure Coburn and certainly Couturier would immediately address this. - Flyers_V88
Would not trade Couturier and his $$ for Eberle and his. Schenn, yes. |
|
|
|
Smid is likely in these discussions- Coburn >Smid... as for Eberle- I certainly hope the (frank) its gross overpayment... |

Yeah, problem is Edmonton thinks that way too... They'll want the best bang for their buck as well. Gotta give to get unfortunately. |

No, the D has been good. There are some holes there. However, a better transition game would definitely help our forwards as opposed to failed clears and icings. |

Why can't it just be a good hockey trade for two badly struggling teams? |

I wouldn't be willing to give. Even with the awful start, he's right at the top of my list of untouchables. If it was Schenn + Coburn for Eberle, I'd be tempted. |

All you have to do is look up our goals for and our goals against. We had the one game we gave up 7, but everything else has been low goals against. It's even better when you consider we spend about 45 seconds per period in the offensive zone. |

You have Timmonen, Mezaros and Gill that are going to be retiring/moving on next year. Pronger is an unknown if he will play again.
Philly should focus on adding younger defense to that aging group, IMO. That is why I said it was short sighted. This year seems to be shot. Dont try the quick fix this year, build for the future. |

Exactly. A top forward would definitely help this year and beyond, but the D will need serious retooling for the next few seasons, barring monumental breakthroughs at the AHL level (Alt/Lauridsen). |

We are looking for some toughness, lets just grab Emery and he can yell and hack everyone after they score on him... Wont stop many pucks but we will be tougher |

Eberle makes players around him better... He is our best winger- he has the smarts and skill as well as stats to prove it... Last year he was near the top in scoring and he played most season with an injured hand FFS... He does not have the speed of Hall nor the flash of 1st overall but until proven otherwise he is our best player... |

If you guys had to pick only 1 player to keep, would it be Hall or Eberle? I know Hall's more a Toews molded guy, but I think Eberle has a better offensive game. I know it sounds crazy, but he's a treat to watch. |

Is Schenn regressing that much? He seems to have fallen back from his progress.

Emery's actually been very good. The Washington debacle aside (the defense decided to only play the first and last 15 minutes), he has been solid if unspectacular in goal. Even in the loss last night, they were both crazy deflections he had no chance against. |
