Well, to be honest, I'm happy! Having three bottom pairing Dmen at 3+ million (Ference, Smid, and N Schultz) just didn't make sense especially with two of 'em signed for at least 3 years.

Would both sides do a trade between Edmonton and Philly: Simmonds and Coburn for Eberle? I feel like that's more or less even considering each team's needs. It would explain the Smid trade in the sense that Edmonton would have to take back a good amount of salary.

It was only 17 games ago that Smid was the best defensive dman the Oilers had seen since the Smith. He was rock solid for 2 years.

Brossoit, freed up cap and roster space for another deal.

Both those kids have been decent to good. But we lost some of the only toughness and willingness to engage we had.

Larsen has played around 23 minutes the last two games so maybe, but again, he was playing like a bottom pairing Dman and at 3.5 million, we don't need that. Brossoit brings a legit goalie prospect into the system and Horak brings minor-league depth with possible upside.

He's the Horak that the Flames rushed into the NHL a couple years ago to "prove" they were drafting well because this kid made their lineup when everyone in Southern Alberta said he'd be better off in the AHL.

Most minutes? Nope. Justin Schultz and Petry have been playing more than him since last season. He's struggled since before he even signed that contract. Now that the team actually has a couple other quality defenders, his appeal has worn off.
