Mark.... if by some miracle they put Samuelsson on waivers (instead of Eaves) to open a roster spot (and we know he won't get claimed) I'm assuming the collective bargaining rules won't allow Detroit to send Sammy to Grand Rapids. Is that correct ?? He'd just be sitting on the bench I'm guessing.

Sven answered this for you.

He could be assigned to Grand Rapids, but since he's on a multiyear 35+ deal the Red Wings would only get $100,000 in cap relief from the transaction, instead of the $925,000 they would get by sending down anyone else (besides Bertuzzi, who also has a 35+ contract).

Unfortunately, that's not enough. Even with Tootoo ($925K) and Sammy ($100k) in Grand Rapids, the Red Wings would still be over the cap once Ericsson returns, unless another player is moved or placed on LTIR.

I think they will be fine cap-wise. I'll explain in my blog later tonight after the game.

Based on my quick math (and I could be missing a loophole here - they get paid to find these, I don't), unless the Red Wings put another player on LTIR in the meanwhile or make a trade, the D-day for figuring out this mess is looking like it might be November 15, which is when Ericsson is projected to come off LTIR.

By the time Ericsson comes off, even if the Red Wings have demoted Almquist and Coreau (who was swapped with Mrazek in a paper move on Monday) and sent Tootoo to Grand Rapids, they'd still be about $257,000 over the cap with a 23-man roster and no waiver-exempt players.

At that point, if they haven't managed to trade anybody and nobody else has gone on LTIR, they'd have no choice but to waive and re-assign an additional player on non-35-plus contract, which unfortunately rules out Samuelsson and probably means Eaves (even though it should be Cleary).

In that scenario, the Wings would be about $668,000 under the cap for 22 players, which is not enough to fit Nyquist in. If the Red Wings needed an extra body up front they would likely go to Emmerton or Glendening, or possibly Jurco or Pulkkinen (Sheahan would put them over the cap, believe it or not).

Even if it was enough to fit Nyquist in, there's no guarantee the Red Wings would go that route, considering they seem to be pretty determined to keep him in the AHL until they can create a permanent solution to their cap and roster issues, which demoting Tootoo and Eaves would not entirely accomplish (since they would be so close to the cap that they would have basically no flexibility for short-term callups).

In short, Ken Holland is probably secretly praying for Mikael Samuelsson to break his femur sometime before next Friday so that he can keep milking the LTIR cow and not potentially get himself into an ugly situation once Ericsson gets healthy.

I'm not doubting that eaves is valuable id like him on the 4th line on a regular basis...I'm just saying he is the one who has been mentioned...obviously Sammy would be ideal it just seems there are so many restrictions with his NTC...I just want nyquist up very badly... A line of him Abby and Tatar would be unreal or even throw helm with them two

His NTC is not an issue...nobody wants him at all or the Wings could just put him on waivers to get around his NTC if Holland knew someone would take him. Not sure anyone would take him even if the Wings picked up half of Sammy's salary either. Teams don't have cap space this year and the few teams that do are on budgets not the cap max and not looking to add any salary.

Wings would have been ok had Holland not signed Cleary. They still would have had to waive some forwards but cap would not have been an issue. Stupid move by Holland to put the Wings in this situation and give contracts to players not worth them.

Here are my revised cap calculations. I'll show my work this time so that anyone who might know better can correct any mistakes I may make.

As of TODAY, the Red Wings are carrying 26 players (3 above the usual limit thanks to Ericsson being on LTIR and Smith and Franzen on short-term IR). The total year long cap cost of all those 26 players put together, plus an extra $25,000 for Nyquist (since his salary is slightly higher than the limit of what the Wings are allowed to bury) is $66,849,545 - which excludes all performance bonuses. (Please note, this is slightly higher than Capgeek's "cap payroll" calculation because the players who have been up and down this year - Mrazek, Almquist, Glendening, etc. - will only count against the cap for the time they spend on the NHL roster.

Of the players on the roster TODAY, the following are waiver exempt: Ouellet, Glendening, Tootoo (because he already cleared), DeKeyser.

Because Detroit has exactly $0 in "banked" cap space so far (since they've been using LTIR credits and have over the cap all season long), as soon as they get everyone off LTIR they would have to get the full-season cap cost of their roster under the $64.3 million cap. Only after that point could they begin to "bank" space and get a little more breathing room as the season progresses.

Assume that Ericsson is ready to come off LTIR on November 15, with no other players traded or placed onto LTIR in the meantime.

If Detroit were to demote Ouellet, Glendening, and Tootoo, that would leave them with 23 players and $64,679,545 in full-season cap hits the roster. That is not enough. They would need to trim an additional $379,545 out of the budget.

One thing that they technically could do as an emergency, temporary resort, which I had missed earlier, is demote DeKeyser. But that would likely leave them with only 5 healthy defenders if Smith isn't back yet. Plus it would, frankly, be stupid.

Again, I could have made an error somewhere in my calculations or my understanding of how the cap works, so please correct me if I'm wrong. If you want to check my numbers the spreadsheet is below. The group on the left is the current roster; the right is the roster with Ouellet, Glendening, and Tootoo demoted:
