As per the author:

It still wasn’t the most popular opinion. But three days later, and a 1-0 win over New Jersey later, and — hey, would you look at that? — Flyers players are saying the brawl did, indeed, give them a spark.

One goal was the positive result of a brawl? Would would it take from this point on to rack up, say, a four spot? Reincarnate the finale from Slapshot?

I mean, just think of how many goals they'd have scored if they cleared the benches!

I meant more in terms of if he find himself back in the pressbox for another round after he returns to the ice. Not that I'm glad to see he's scratched tonight.

It's deserved.

You can't play a player if he's continually performing beneath the level he's expected to play at - not that the bar is set unreasonably high in Luke's case.

By the way, this will please many of you: I will not be here for a while.

Wife's at 2cm and getting induced tomorrow. Next time I'm on here, I will most likely be babbling more incoherently than usual due to sleep deprivation.

Yeah. Gill actually played decent. A team with speed would exploit him. The thing is based on level of play Schenn deserves to sit, but so does a lot of other guys.

Right now, things are a mess, you never know they can turn around. Crazier things have happened. This roster isn't anywhere near as bad as 06-07. The roster certainly has holes, but I don't think they are anywhere near as bad as what we have seen so far.

Definitely a lot more wrong in the brainspace this time around. Even if the mix isn't great, the talent should be enough to get some goal scoring going. And overall, I'm with you on wanting Schenn22 on the ice. I just hope, once he gets his chance again, that he runs with it.

That's certainly one school of thought. But I think it's a pretty well accepted idea that around the league that sitting a guy and letting him watch a few games is a good way to help a player see the game from a different perspective and correct his mental mistakes. You may not agree, but this is hardly a novel approach.

Also, as to the benefit of playing Gill, I think the benefit is that he won't make mental mistakes. So even if he isn't the fastest skater or the best passer, he knows how to play within himself and avoid mental mistakes. That's what we want Schenn and Gus to learn. So it doesn't seem that far fetched to think that watching a guy like Gill go out there and play a solid game despite his physical limitations is a good way for them to learn how to do it. Hell, at this point, Gill may be the only d-man we have who is not making a ton of mental mistakes every game.

Fair points. Schenn played well last year, it's very alarming to see his level of play drop off a cliff. IMO I think he can be a solid NHL regular who contributes, I just don't view his ceiling as a top pairing dman.

The lack of scoring is mind boggling. Like you said the sum maybe better than the parts, but there is no way over a 13 game stretch that this team should average well below two goals a game. Guys just aren't willing to pay the price to put the puck in the net.

Although I didn't like the Downie trade, I was hoping he would help the scoring. Unfortunately he won't be playing anytime soon.

Not sure what his ceiling is at this point. Last year he sure looked like a guy who could be part of a top pair. Certainly not a "true #1" by whatever definition of that you may have, but he didn't look out of place playing 20+ minutes a night with Kimmo. But so far this season he has definitely not played up to that level.

But on this team, the list of players who are playing as well as they did last year is pretty damn short. Let's see there's Mason, and, um.....?

Mason would be about it. B. Schenn has played well at times, but he's had some ups and downs as well. That isn't unexpected. The team has literally gotten nothing from Giroux, Hartnell, and Timonen.
