Brett Sutter on waiver by Carolina. Outside of being one of the many sutters I honestly don't know much about him. would he be more of a viable 4th line energy guy for the Flyers than Hall?

The Flyers won their two Cups because they had three Hall of Fame players including their goaltender, a Hall of Fame coach who understood his personnel and adapting his system to them (in fact, he was among the first NHL "systems" coaches, although not the first), a Hall of Fame GM who assembled a deep roster. The Flyers of those years routinely outworked every opponent, and that's what the people who honed in only on the fighting/intimidation aspect didn't understand but which Shero understood perfectly.

I detest the "Cups" argument. The Flyers came damn close to three other Cups (1980, 1987 and 2010) since then, and losing those hard-fought Finals, especially in 1987 in seven games against Edmonton, was not a reflection of failure. On the flip side, even had they won the Cup in any or all of those years, what relevance would it have to the state of the team right now? None.

The Flyers post 1995 have too often been guilty of trying to "win last year's Cup" rather than being the pace-setters, which is what they were when Keith Allen was the GM who assembled the 1970s team and, along with McCammon's off-ice input on personnel (because he was a mediocre NHL coach), laid much of the draft-day and earlier trade foundation for the rosters of the mid-1980s. But Keith Allen was a once-in-a-generation type of GM, much like the Phillies golden eras were built by Paul Owens and Pat Gillick. The Flyers have never had their worthy successor to Allen, and that's not a knock on guys like Farwell, Clarke and Holmgren so much as a statement of how high Allen set the bar.

Man.

I have been looking at multiple newspaper sites, Twitter/blogs, and none of them have anything much about what the Flyers might be wanting to do except Bruce Garrioch's piece today in the Ottawa Sun, which says pretty much what you'd expect: The Flyers are desperate to make some kind of deal, but nothing of real substance. I don't even know how much of that I'd believe.

Deals come out of nowhere, like Talbot for Downie, so it's not that I'm saying that I expect anyone to really know what actual trades the Flyers might or might not be considering.

I'm more wondering about the when, and the why. Is this team still thinking it can make the playoffs, or no? Are they thinking they can make the playoffs with the roster we have, which is 4-6 over the past 10 games but has shown some overall improvement, despite Friday's rock-bottom moment?

Or are they just going to pack it in for the season, let everything ride until the trade deadline, because they already know they're not going to make the kinds of changes needed for the roster during the season?

Either way...I'm just a fan, a guy with a laptop. I don't get to choose. But it would really be nice to get an idea about what they're thinking, just for ease in framing how to think about this team for the rest of the year.

Buyers? Sellers? Neutral? Playoffs or bust? No playoffs possible?

Just wish I had some clue what they are thinking.

I can't wait until Rob Zombie's Bully movie comes out. Hopefully it depicts the Flyers for what they were, an extremely tough, highly skilled fearless team with an all time great goalie. This will put the notion to rest that they were strictly goons......but it's easier for the masses to believe this

Last night's game literally put me to sleep. Sounds like the Flyers played as a team and kept things simple and defense-first oriented.

Not sure how Gill looked last night but I still think a team like Colorado or Anaheim would definitely take him wide with speed. Glad Meszaros got back in there. Need to keep Mesz in there.

Which makes this day all the more boring. A horrendous loss gives us more than three thousand posts. A hard earned win is currently at 58.

I love the drama, can we make a trade?

Nah, that was normal a few years back, before the mass exodus of many of the original group

It's also a Sunday. But winning a game does have a lot to do with it, unfortunately

Just watched Ottawa-Dallas, because I was curious to see Valeri Nichushkin.

He scored his first goal today, which was nice for the young player.

Now, don't get me wrong: The Flyers might just have a good one in Samuel Morin, and I definitely want to see the young man be a strong player for us in a position we desperately need.

But WOW. You can see the Nichushkin kid just REEKS of talent and skill. He's freaking big, too. Can really skate.

Damn. I hate losing.

But the weak part of me wouldn't mind getting one of those guys in the house. When you see pure talent on display sometimes...wow.

I dont advocate for it, but if it happens, it happens for a reason. Which I think is what we may see here.

Tanking also isnt some concrete method to establishing a solid team, as the Oilers have shown us. Has to be really hard to be an Edmonton fan right now. Quinn, Renney, Kruger, and now Eakins.

Another team where managment imo is the biggest concern.
