I did not dispute anything. When was Luke Schenn scrached in Toronto, and how did he play when he returned to the lineup?
And I'll ask any question I want to. And to this point you haven't answered the question.

- MJL

More accurately than anything I might post ..

Following his last and final scratch in Toronto (I think) came this article :

http://thehockeyguys.net/...e-leafs-coming-to-an-end/

He doesn’t appear to be anything more than an inconsistent fifth or sixth defenceman at this point although many still believe that he could turn out to be a regular top-four guy in the future. But will he ever achieve that level with the Leafs?

If things continue to go the way they currently are for Schenn, the answer to that question is likely no. Not helping the situation is the fact that Carlyle recently scratched Schenn and lowered his ice time, which surely can’t impress the native of Saskatoon.

Your response to the unasked question of young defensemen having ups and downs would be appropriate at this time.

They do?
- feelingkettle

Yeah...they're moving their feet, trying for forecheck, moving the puck. The passing hasn't been below the bar, either.

Again, this team has displayed suspect character for too long for me to trust them. But after last night's debacle, at least they have shown some interest in playing an NHL game.

They didn't have the cap space to structure it any other way... and they clearly didn't know he was going to have 35+ status before they traded for him.... they had no choice but to sign him after they had already peddled away the future for him... it was a series of critical missteps with far-reaching consequences.

I contend that it was a bigger blunder than the Bryzgalov debacle.

- Tomahawk

It was a great trade, no doubt about it. The 35+ issue is moot because I contend they still would have made the trade regardless. And the contract was structured the way it was, not because they had little choice, but because it made sense to do so. There were no missteps involved with trading for Pronger. It elevated the team.

When a team loses a player like Pronger, a GM can't put a specific plan in place to replace him. That is the fallacy that escapes you. A GM cannot see into the future to know what player might be available to him in a trade. What player might become a Free Agent and is willing to sign with the team. Or what player might fall to them in the draft, and then whether or not that player will develop into the player they think he could become.
I have not agreed with everything Holmgren has done. Like all GM's he has made some mistakes. I've been objective in looking at his moves. Objectivity is something that you haven't had when looking at Holmgren as a GM. Beginning with your failure many times of not realizing and considering how much of an impact losing a franchise defenseman to a career ending injury has on a team.
This changing his mind and calling him reactionary and incompetent is just the latest mantra. Failing to take into account that one, after making the Richards/Carter deals, he has kept the core intact that he received in those deals. Even to the point according to reports of not being willing to trade some of those players. And the fact that you conveniently omit that from consideration in forming your opinion, only points further to a lack of objectivity.

- MJL

- that one escaped bill too...that arcane concept of losing a top player yet still managing to win with the plyrs you do have...deep. the idea that two aging dman requires a succession plan...like i articulated draft day of '11.

- your right i can't...i just can't...comprehend

no, what's escaped you is that their GM is responsible for the team he put together and that there is something called plan B...and there is no way anyone could objectively say he's done a good job over the last 2-3 yrs. GMs are judged by results. the flyers results since 1/12 suck.

Remember, the first 17 or so minutes last night was pretty decent too. The key is what happens after any sort of adversity

You expected Pronger to play for $575,000 at the age of 41 and 42?

Have any players played out the minimum wage years of any similarly frontloaded star level contract?

- Flyers_01

What I expected has nothing to do with it. We simply don't know what would've happened. Anything else is speculation.

It's an old article. Defenseman having ups and downs isn't an unasked question. It's a statement that I made.

Meanwhile, Lupul, Etem, Palmieri and Sbisa are playing for young, winning clubs... while the Flyers are hampered with Pronger's cap-hit until 2017 and about to miss the PO's for the second season in a row. Coincidence? No.

They've been playing this period...last night was rock bottom, without a doubt.

We'll see if they have any backbone if/when New Jersey scores.
