So tonight will be the first time in a very long time that I choose not to watch a Flyers game. I'll keep track of the score, but since watching this team has lately only ended up with me being angry I've decided to take a break.

Is anyone else feeling the same or do you guys plan on torturing yourselves once again tonight?

- EducatedOpinion

I am watching because I love hockey.
I also want to see the game where the team breaks out and Giroux plays like he should.
Ok I want to see the Rocket known as Hal Gil flying around also.

Never stated that the GM is not responsible. The only thing dopey here is you trying to put that statement on me, which obviously wasn't made.

You assume incorrectly that drafting Maata or Hamilton automatically replaces Pronger. The Flyers can certainly be criticized for the lack of home grown defenseman. But they've done a lot to rectify that in the recent past. They have a good stable of defensive prospects. And the Flyers have a policy of drafting the best player available regardless of position. A policy I agree with. Drafting is not the only way and building a defense. As we've seen with the quality defense that team's under Holmgren have iced in the past.

You're going off on a completely different tangent then the post you quoted. You aren't even discussing the points I made. I'm not wrong.

I did not state that the GM is not responsible for the product put on the ice. One game scratched does not define a player.

- MJL

you said no GM can have a plan. if you don't have a plan or change your mind so many times there is no plan, then you're just reactionary and/or incompetent...no core principles to bind to.

you've agreed w/ almost everything homer has done and proclaimed your complete faith in him, yet when you are called on it, you claim he can't help it if such and such happens, like pronger...ergo, ultimately- he's not responsible...what? just unlucky?

you're simply an apologist...not surprise from someone in favor of bringing back bryz for this year.

At this point its kind of whatever, but lets scratch two kids who have at chance at improving for veterans who have peaked, and are on the decline.

Win now baby! Win now.

Insanity, at least use Lauridsen or Alt, this team is going nowhere. But nope, give a 60 year old man who could drop dead at any point after a shift because he's so old and slow the start.

It's Saturday night.

Even when your team sucks, it's still what you do.

You just drink a little more. And swear a little more.

Giroux has never scored more than 30 goals in a season yet
Heatley scored 40-50 a number of times

Giroux has never scored more than 100 points in a season
Heatley did is a few times

Giroux will never be better

We seem to be on different frequencies here.

What's the wake-up call?

You can't just tell a guy to quit playing poorly.

You can tell a guy to quit putting in a 50% effort. That ain't Luke.

If you could simply bench a guy until he starts playing up to his potential again, Liles would be back in the top four of Toronto.

- Atomic Wedgie

I can show you replays of goals scored with Luke Schenn on the ice, where he's standing still, and not making the effort that he should be making. A player needs to be held accountable for that. He needs to know that he should be better then he is, and maybe a game where he sits, might wake him up. He needs to move his feet, and become more active. There's has been talk in Philly that he has a conditioning issue. That seems evident. He has to get back to work and get back to being the player he was last Season.

I asked what Luke Schenn's response was, not Toronto's. Good players get traded all the time.
- MJL

Toronto decided that his on ice response was worthy of only third pairing minutes before the trade. If you are talking about whether his play improved or not, clearly Toronto thought it didn't.

Now THAT is the Flyers organization I know and love -- giving all the whiners in the NHL the middle finger!

Suck it, Phaneuf!

Sadly, Mason is the only reason to watch this team right now.

I'm not real surprised that Emery is in net tonight ... he was probably scheduled to start anyway, considering the workload that Mason has had.

When a team loses a player like Pronger, a GM can't put a specific plan in place to replace him. That is the fallacy that escapes you. A GM cannot see into the future to know what player might be available to him in a trade. What player might become a Free Agent and is willing to sign with the team. Or what player might fall to them in the draft, and then whether or not that player will develop into the player they think he could become.
I have not agreed with everything Holmgren has done. Like all GM's he has made some mistakes. I've been objective in looking at his moves. Objectivity is something that you haven't had when looking at Holmgren as a GM. Beginning with your failure many times of not realizing and considering how much of an impact losing a franchise defenseman to a career ending injury has on a team.
This changing his mind and calling him reactionary and incompetent is just the latest mantra. Failing to take into account that one, after making the Richards/Carter deals, he has kept the core intact that he received in those deals. Even to the point according to reports of not being willing to trade some of those players. And the fact that you conveniently omit that from consideration in forming your opinion, only points further to a lack of objectivity.

And I don't condone what Ray Emery did -- I said it last night, and I meant it. He shouldn't have done that.

But at the same time, all the freaking whining going on today about "attacking a defenseless player" -- are you effing kidding me?

I've seen more fights in this league than I can count where one guy was defenseless. The entire Buffalo-Toronto fracas that got David Clarkson suspended for 10 games for leaving the bench was because John Scott told Phil Kessel he was going to break him.

So no, Ray Emery shouldn't have done what he did. But no, the NHL's pristine image doesn't suffer one bit from it -- Patrick Roy beat the hell out of, who was that, Mike Vernon or Chris Osgood? Just for the hell of it?

Wasn't the first time, won't be the last time.

Nah -- he won't fight tonight, and he shouldn't. But the Flyers starting him isn't the worst thing in the world, because what he did last night, while I don't condone it, wasn't the worst thing that league has ever seen.

Brodeur has a .879 sv% and nearly a 3 gaa coming into this game. The Flyers have Hal Gill playing his first game in 6 months.

Brodeur get's the shutout and the winning goal goes between hal gill's legs and in the net.

Young defenseman are normally up and down in their development. It's not uncommon.

Luke Schenn has played 5 complete NHL Seasons. He has been a 20+ minute defenseman in 3 out of those 5 Seasons. He needs to find consistency in his game.
