It's too bad that Luke Schenn has to clear waivers to be sent down.

Before anybody takes my head off, I'm not saying "I hate Luke Schenn" or "I think he's an AHL player" or "He can never help us."

He's just a player right now who looks like he could use a couple of weeks down there playing massive minutes, while working with Terry Murray -- who is one of the best teachers of defensemen I think the Flyers have ever had -- so he can get his game in order.

You can't do that at the NHL level, and in this case, what Schenn needs, to me, is to play a huge amount of minutes and then get some strong technical instruction.

- AllInForFlyers

Perhaps they should switch Paddock and Murray?

giroux 333 games .87 points/game
heatley 354 games (closest ending season) 1.10 points/game

giroux is nothing special

- 2Real

Clearly you are right based on the extensive sample of Girouxs playing career.
Let me go look how many players have averaged a point a game over the past 3 seasons in the NHL..

I disagree -- they became more experienced in game situations, but they don't often become better in technical details about the game.

I think the easiest example is what Mark Alt is doing down there; he's learning the speed of the professional game but also receiving technical instruction at the level that Luke Schenn has likely not gotten in the NHL.

I remember when St. Louis sent Alex Pietrangelo down; they said it was obvious that he could stay in the NHL and play, but he needed technical work. I think it's the same with Schenn -- he's not going to be able to mask his issues with foot speed and skill limitations without being technically superior.

- AllInForFlyers

Sure they become better in the technical details of the game at the NHL level. That is how players improve. Ask any NHL Coach or Assistant Coach, and they'll tell you different. For example, Jeff Reese had Mason move further back in his net, so he has less distance to travel side to side. That is a technical adjustment. The same is done for defenseman. They do drills to work on their footwork, they do passing drills. They're coached on positioning, and stick position, etc.

I wish we had two Terry Murrays...but for where we are now, I'd rather Murray be down there with the kids, trying to get them ready to rock.

Let's be honest: We might need Mark Alt to make it. Nick Cousins, Petr Straka...we might need a number of those guys to really and truly make it, and personally, I think Murray is one guy who teaches the game well enough that I can honestly believe it might happen.

They need to bring that emotion back tonight. Maybe not quite the same "give up the game and go on a murderous rampage" energy, but something a little more desperate than what they've shown recently would be great.

I dont want lunacy, poop like what Emery did.

However its time to unleash the peanuts. Get chippy and crazy.

I agree. Flyers have some good D prospects. Hoping a few workout. Murray is a good man to have in that position. He teaches players to play the right way.

I have no idea how good he will be when his career ends just like you have no idea that he won't be a point per game player over the course of his career.

You want to dismiss what he has done so far based on 12 games, have fun with that.

The difference is that in the AHL, the focus is on playing and development, in the NHL, the focus is on winning.

Just say that Luke Schenn gets scratched tonight, like he was being scratched in Toronto -- and if Hal Gill is in, that might happen.

That's not going to help. Because he needs to play and receive intensive technical instruction.

Hopefully that was them just saying enough of this we're not going to just rollover and take it. If G is a true leader he needs to show it tonight. Get everyone to take that frustration and put it into a full 60 minute game.

This season he is not playing as some amazing player.
He is also 1.5 seasons removed from a 93 , 3 in the league overall in points season where he was an amazing player.

At this point its kind of whatever, but lets scratch two kids who have at chance at improving for veterans who have peaked, and are on the decline.

Win now baby! Win now.

See? There it is. Scratching Schenn doesn't help him, as a player. It just doesn't. We don't need him sitting at the NHL level. We need him playing well at the NHL level.

And I don't know at the moment, how you get him there.

I'm not one of those people who says that you have to win trades. Some trades, you will lose.

But the Flyers...at the age he is, we can't just let Luke Schenn not make it. Not for what we gave up. He's 23 years old. We have to help him make it.

I don't disagree with that. But players in the NHL absolutely receive technical instruction, and players absolutely improve technical aspects of their play at the NHL level.
