This team plays better hockey down a goal in the third than up a goal.

Better goaltending and you'd be up a goal more than you'd be down.

Vanek is a better skater than THAT....he's just a guy who comes straight in and picks a corner in the shootout, like Tambellini used to do, as opposed to making a bunch of moves like Frans. When you don't have anyone chasing you, and that's what you're going to do ANYWAY, there's no need to skate 25 MPH toward the goalie...only bad things can happen....especially if he's playing in our building, on the un-frozen pond....

You saw what we traded for in period two....that was a top shelf pass, right there.

Vanek is going to be fine, people need to lay off of him.

Question: its clear the isles goaltending is in bad shape organizationally. Nabby looks bad, poulin and Nilsson are not overly impressive. Koskinen is in the KHL for 2 years. What about Reimer in Toronto? What would it take to get him? Would it be worth it to trade for him? Is he #1 material?

I think Poulin with playing time can be a serviceable Back-up, but he's not getting that time.

Nilsson & Kosk are both atleast a year away from being given a shot at the NHL level.

Reimer is a very good option.
What would it take to get him.... whatever it is, hopefully we can put Poulin in that package.
It would be worth it to trade for him in the short term
I dont think he is #1 Material, atleast.. not star talent. He's a #1 like Healey was a #1, on our team yha, on most other teams.. naaaa

Something has to give. This team is being held back by the D and goaltending. The D looks like its future is bright. Can't say that it looks the same in goal.

And, at what point does Snow address this? The defense WILL get better with time as the prospects come up. But it seems as if the GLARING hole is in goal and if this indeed is Nabby's last year(should be) what the heck are they going to do next season? Poulin hasn't looked as solid since the injuries. Nilsson didn't look good at all and Koskinen is now tied up in the KHL for 2 years. So that leaves them looking outside the organization for a #1. The price for Vanek was Moulson, a 1st rounder and a second rounder. How much would a young, #1 netminder cost? Scary.

When Vanek really heats up, he'll impress the doubters. But like many power forward-type players, he's streaky. But last night...drawing the attention of defenders and then dishing the puck...when was the last time you ever saw Tavares that open? Has it ever happened? That's what Vanek brings...he's a secondary threat on that line that demands attention from defenders. And if they're paying attention to him, Tavares will have more room. If they're paying attention to Tavares, Vanek will have more room. If they split their attention, both players will be able to take advantage of some more one-on-one situations. I know in the Age of Instant Gratification it's hard to imagine that it may take a couple of games for the two to really start showing what they can do together, but it'll happen more frequently as the season goes on.

Excellent points UIF! I have no doubts about Vanek. Vanek is the least of the Isles concerns.

I'm hoping with more playing time he will be fine. I really really hope he plays well tonight. He needs to get into a couple of games in a row.

At this point it would have been more beneficial to him, for us to keep DP as a back up that never plays, let Poulin start in Bridgeport & call him up every time Nabby gets a game off... once every 2 weeks.

Backups do not play much that is why they are backups. Look at teams like the Rags Bruins etc. However when their backups do play they play well. The rusty thing is just an excuse. Neither Poulin nor Nabby are good goalies. Plain and simple.

Well, NHL. Com has him at 6'0'' 184 lbs
Vis is 5'10''

I don't believe it. Players always exaggerate their height. Kid looks like he's five foot.

A big difference is those teams play much better D. I could be wrong but I have to think the backups on those teams do not sit as long as the Isles backup.

you are correct on the definition of a back up, but when you have a young goalie that hasn't played much in his pro career at either level.. that is not good at all for their development. No one said Poulin was rusty.. he hasnt been given the ability to develop into anything other then a sieve.

Nabby is a fine goalie, but he is older & the D in front of him sucks a major turd covered in burnt hair.

Incase any one cares, DP played his first game for the Charlotte Checkers on 30th, The Checkers lost to the defending Calder Cup champions The Grand Rapids Griffins 5-2 he played the whole game, gave up 4 goals.

"DiPietro, a 32-year-old NHL veteran who signed a professional tryout signing with the Checkers over the weekend, looked poised in net despite this being his first game at any level this season. The first three goals that beat him would have required stellar saves, including the opener from Gustav Nyquist, one of the league’s most skilled players, who beat him on a one-timer from the slot to tie the game at 1-1 in the first period. Grand Rapids’ next two goals gave it a 3-1 lead in the middle frame, as Mitch Callahan scored on a deflection and Ryan Sproul scored on a blast from the point that found the top corner of the net over the blocker of DiPietro, who was screened on the play. Callahan’s goal marked the first time the Checkers had trailed on the road all season.

A fourth goal was the most stoppable of the bunch, with Tomas Jurco flying down the left wing and snapping a quick shot that DiPietro partially blocked before seeing the puck trickle over the line behind him. Nyquist’s second of the night came into the empty net as the Checkers had opted for the extra attacker when Rask gave his team a glimmer of hope by scoring his second of this season with 3:39 remaining."

Poulin may or may not be the answer. There is no debate the Isles have done a lousy job in developing him. Same for some of the other young players.
