Never called it a bad deal. Just thought that the sakic model would be better in cases where you know that the player is staying. But i guess alfie proved me wrong bolting. Again i think its fair at the end of the day. I can admit when i mis judge things. - clark_griswold
Respect. I was incredulous when Kessel got 8M. I was actually sad for Leafs fans. But looks good so far. I hope they have room for Kadri... unless you still want to trade him for Lou... |

I stand by van doing the right thing by keeping lou. Was never sold on Schneider and you got a way better return for him. |

I'm an older guy - I'm talking about many years of history here. Leafs had some very good picks during the 70's and 80's and still couldn't win crap because of mismanagement. - LeftCoaster
Do you really want to go back to the 70's and 80's? Careful there...I'm pretty sure they kept records back then. |

A Belarussian player maybe, but I can't see someone like Datsyuk, Ovechkin, Crosby, Kane or Toews doing this. |

It's safe to assume that they could have got a lot more on the open market. Especially with the cap going up. Ergo, it's a good deal for the Canucks. - hankthetank
There's no way you can just assume that...remember it's not 7m, it's 14m. And not a lot of teams are willing to spend that on 2 forwards.
They've been underpaid for years and even if they end up a little overpaid on this deal...so what. They're the face of the franchise and the Canucks would be (frank)ed offensively without them. |

It's a great deal. And definitely a discount.
Their play is still at a high level—down from their Art Ross years but still at or slightly above their career averages.
With the cap expected to go up to $70 million (ish) they still take up the same % of the cap.
Your earlier suggestion of $5 million is ludicrous. There are few, if any, comparable players not on an ELC or 2nd contract who are putting up the numbers they are for $5 million. |

I said 7 on a 2 year, 5 on a 4 year. They are not getting better getting on with age. That's my point. |

It's not just me assuming that it's a good deal. Most fans and analysts say the same thing. They could have demanded a lot more on the open market. Most teams, at least good teams, are paying their top 2 forwards in the neighbourhood of 12-17 million a season. The Sedins are in the middle of that. |

This is a great deal for the Canucks! Two very good players/people still at the top of their game. I hope they can win it all some day. - LeftCoaster

I don't disagree with what they're worth...it's that as a package deal a team has to commit 14m which is a lot. You need a team with a huge hole up front and a lot of money and Cap to spend.
My only point is that it was unlikely they were going to test the FA market, unless they split up. |

i'll give a little to you nucks fans - if semin gets 7 a year, i'll admit the sedins are worth 12.
no matter what team you hate / love, the semin contract was the worst in history and everyone knew it.
Similar to the yashin for spezza/chara deal, everyone saw that train wreck coming. |

I never said it's not done, just that it's not done everywhere. And, if the Sedins had gone to FA, you basically just eliminated 8 teams from their list of possible destinations.
The fact is that since they come as a pair it would have been more difficult to find a possible team for them to go to. Not impossible...but definitely more difficult.

I think they both deserve those contracts.
I'm surprised they got that much purely because if they want to play on the same team, there aren't many attractive destinations for them as UFA's who could absorb their combined cap number.
Length seems about right. Last big contract, then if they don't win a Cup in Vancouver, still a couple years of usefulness they can sign wherever gives them the best shot at one for next to nothing. |

You mean like Dale Talon and his new owner in Florida? How about New Jersey? Dallas have a new owner yet? Islanders want to fill that new building and win a cup?
There might not be a dozen teams looking to sign them, but all it takes is 2 to create a bidding war and 3 for a frenzy. |

Were you following the conversation? From 81 to 89, nine years inclusive, the Leafs picked 6th overall, 3rd, 7th, 4th, 1st, 6th, 7th, 6th & 3rd overall. Not three 1st's I'll give you that, but that's some good players picked and they still not so much as made a Cup final appearance.
Thus the comparison to the current Oilers management. |
