Doubling his wage before watching him perform after coming off a pretty serious injury, seem like jumping the gun, no?
- pete26

Is he really 600k better than a guy like Smid?

Why do you hate Emelin so much?

Well, I hope your right.

Because there's a lot of complaining about another fella's contract that is, let's say not so effective these days.

- pete26

fine.

the funny thing is, I wrote my reasoning up pretty well in the blog today. It's worth as much consideration as what you're saying.

this signing could blow up in Bergevin and the Canadiens face. But I believe the risk was well worth it, and that opinion is justified in the blog.

I'd say they are very good comparables for one another, though Emelin is obviously a bit more physical. but at the rate of inflation and market value, 600,000 isn't much of a difference really.

I don't "hate" anyone.

Say your best egg flipper at your restaurant broke his flipping wrist.

Just before he came back to work would you double his wage before seeing if his flipping wrist was as good as it was before?

Smid signed his deal last year when he was about to be a UFA, is like a 6 year vet and stays pretty god damn healthy.

How is a dude with 2 seasons worth so much more because of "inflation"?

Pete, the history of this injury tells us that there will be no ill effects after one surgery to reconstruct a knee. Relax FFS. Unless it's your money. Is it?
This is a player the Habs cannot afford to lose. I agree it's not a bargain, and in fact they may have overpaid a bit. But they had no choice.

This dude is about to be UFA as well. Smid has a longer tenure no doubt, and there is no arguing that. Emelin never had knee problems and then he got hurt. Once. Let's see how he comes back, but again, history tells us that at his age, he should be just fine.

I'm not sure 600,000$/year is so much more. Not to mention, Smid took a discount. Market value is based on whether or not teams have access to like-players out there. I don't see many players like Emelin on this year's market, if any...

Smid signed in April, when the cap was set to go down significantly. Cap is projected to rise in each of the next four years (though that's not a certainty, it's still a market force)

I don't think Emelin is worth so much more than Smid, but I don't think 600,000/year is so much more given the different factors mentioned above.

Okay but is he worth the same price tag after like 100 games as Voynov, Giordano, Hedman, Shattenkirk?

I'm relaxed, just saying MB could have waited to see if he was still effective.

And of course they had a choice, unless someone was caught with a goat.

Also, no it's not my money and as I said yesterday, it won't affect my lunch plans.

Just stating MHO, that's all.

Can you come back and ask me a year from now? I honestly believe that he is just one player that they cannot afford to lose, because of the way he plays the game.

Don't think he needed to. And don't think they had a choice.

Also, I know you're calm.

Because if he waited 15 games Emelin would've asked for 5 million a year for his 20 career points and "physical play"?

Telling me has 20 career points is a waste of time. First, he has 19 if I recall. Second, he could have zero points, and I couldn't care less. Third, I don't think Emelin would have asked for more, no. But if the waiting was for performance, it would have changed nothing. As that is the case, they had no choice.

But is he really a great egg flipper....or does he make a lot of omletes?

You know...nothing fancy, fills a hole, but a lot of people can make an omlete.
