Doubling his wage before watching him perform after coming off a pretty serious injury, seem like jumping the gun, no? - pete26

The argument has merit, but the waiting game with Emelin is a dangerous one to play.
For one, the Habs don't want to judge him on those first 15-20 games. They don't want to evaluate him on that and then let him go, only to completely regret it.
and if he plays great, his value goes up. and if they wait longer, it becomes an idea in his head to test the market, at which point you lose him to a team that'll pay much more than the Canadiens just paid. - EricEngels
Emelin is their only physical D (aside from Tinordi, but he isn't ready). He's a good skater, he can also block shots. Bergevin is preparing for next summer. In my opinion Diaz will play elsewhere after this season, as well as Markov, unless he's willing to say goodbye to the money he could get via free agency. |

Well, if he comes back and is the same player, I'd say it's fair, no?

Time will tell I guess.
Comparing him to other over-inflated contract might not be the best way to go.
like I said, happy to have him back... hope it doesn't create a cap situation. |

seems and is are two different things.
he doesn't have a history of this type of injury.
he could come back and play lousy, he'd still go to market and fetch the same payout at the very least.
check UFAs for this summer and see how many of them check the boxes he does.
Unique player, and one other GMs would make excuses for if he had a tough time coming back from his injury in year one.
Like I said in the blog, at first blush this is a fair and good deal, I won't judge it until he's got a training camp under his belt and is playing with the pressure of having to perform for that money.
Right now, he makes prorated 2 mil to play this year. |

On the open market, years will be important for Markov.
The Canadiens want to re-sign him, but they have to go on a year-to-year basis with him if they're to respect the plan they're working on. If Bergevin does more, and ahead of free agency, that's something you can call a mistake on day 1, regardless of the dollar figure. |

Because there's a lot of complaining about another fella's contract that is, let's say not so effective these days.
