Let's relax for a little while and just enjoy the team

Did I miss something? Are you talking about the Flyers? I think I have enjoyed maybe 6 periods all season.

Lemme slide those on for a second if you will hooligan...

Touching on the trade first, I really love the move. One, it's a freaking trade, of a likable locker-room guy too. And that should shake it up. Expanding on that note, two, Steve Downie is a hell of a spark plug to bring in. He brings energy, and I watched a ton of Avs games after that crazy first game, and he did a lot of good little things on a line with Duchene.

Second, on this godforsaken JvR/Schenn trade. I have a signed, JvR jersey that he signed for me personally, his draft year was the first year I heavily scouted the draft since we were awful and I was devastated as a young boy. So I have a soft spot for him. Still do. JvR and Kessel are running my fantasy poop right now.

With that being said, this is a JvR that had 1 great playoff series and several good shifts spread out between 1634 other not-that-noticeable shifts. He had great speed for a big kid, and even nicer hands. In today's NHL that's super formidable. What he always seemed to lack, to me, was a motor. He never got up on his skates or had any giddy-up and go. I look for that a lot in an offensive player, how quick can they act/react on their skates. He really was incredible that one series, I thought (even after they got smoked by Boston) he'd turn a corner and start playing like the tank he could have been. But then injuries set in, and the same inconsistencies, and the same (I use this word loosely) lethargic or not-noticeable play.

Is Schenn the perfect defenseman, did he even fit the exact need that we are lacking on the blueline? No, he didn't. And he won't ever. MAYBE some season he'll score 5 goals and have 20 assists. Good year. Great year even. Because he plays a gritty game that is such a vital position, and he certainly has a lot of potential in his role. And none of that will give him numbers. Defenseman have the longest learning curve of all skaters. Defensive-defenseman, IMO, have the longest learning curve out of all various "types" of skaters.

Did we "win" that trade? Ask me in 5 years. Right now, no we aren't winning it, cause JvR has 13 pts and 12 games and is the most likely candidate to break Gretsky's record. But last year I thought Schenn played great, so much so that I thought that we were winning the trade, albeit by small margin. People so easily forget that defense isn't flashy.

I feel like if WIP had a blog thread, you loony-toons would occupy their interwebs. Let's relax for a little while and just enjoy the team. At least until Talbot scores a triple Gordie (hatty, 3 apples and 3 great KO scraps) and we can all go back to rooting for a lockout.

If any of the Flyers have sons, brothers or best friends that are even marginal NHL players, they will be on this team. That's how Homer rolls.

Giroux scores a goal. Downie scores a goal and the Flyers win 5-2.

That is going to happen.

C'mon Moat! Schenn was a 20+ minutes defenseman for over 180 games in this League. You stated he was a below 15 minute defenseman for all but 20 games in his career.
- MJL

I fessed up... It was more than an exaggeration. He wasn't exactly the prized defenseman they thought they had drafted.

Let's face it, you are the hopeful "Luke Schenn will be a 2-4 defenseman" and I'm the OMFG please let him become a 4" guy.

You know I'm rooting for your perspective but he just keeps kicking me in the face when I watch.

I hope you have a face shield. Because he might do it a bunch more this season, and maybe a few more next season, but after that, he'll be smooth sailing until he puts it together and he will at least be a formidable 2nd paring anchor.

Last year for the majority of the year, he played very well overall. Even having stretches of games where he was an absolute beast back there. He's struggled for 11 games so far, but that doesn't define the player. And if it does, what is Giroux?

If I'm the Flyers I'm trading low on him like they did JVR. Maybe we can get Dekeyser.
