Looking at the trade player for player, the Flyers clearly got the better, more talented player.
- MJL

Well, that does depend on which quality you are measuring and what the particular needs of the teams involved are. But, whatever, he may be "overall in a generally speaking kind of way" better on paper, but the difference isn't so great that it will make a huge difference in anything. He certainly doesn't suddenly make them a playoff team.

Downie has 36 pims this year. Discipline seems to be off the charts.
- PLindbergh31

Ok so I had to look this up because I was curious about the 36 mins. 10 mins came from a misconduct, 10 game from 2 fighting majors, 16 mins came from minors. of the 8 minors, 5 had his team shorthanded.

The fact they use his stats as a defense baffles me...
It's like getting a potential employee referred to you and on his résumé it says border line failure in school... Misses work constantly has mediocre work.. Yes let me hire him!

- JoeRussomanno

The only problem with your analogy is that the stats don't equal up to that.

Downie is 25. If we can keep this teams core and deal with the growing pains... I completely agree with Homer. This teams has immense potential in a few years. Just need two top pair defensemen.

No, but the outrage/disbelief that (too) many folks here have that some of us just don't like Downie the player and their trying to cram his stats down our throats with each and every post is a bit tiring.
- Scoob

stats were relevant for me as to whether he qualified as a top 9 plyr. other than that i get that there are concerns about durability, discipline, etc.

I'm sorry but a guy who struggles to pot a dozen goals a year isn't in my definition of "top 9" player, when he brings little other qualities.

Look at this. Look at what Homer has done. Instead of everyone talking about Giroux's slow start, they are talking about whether Downie will murder someone tonight. Homer has played his hand and won. Pronger was the lightning rod, now Downie is.

Claude will blossom tonight before our eyes. You will see a man possessed. He will score 5 hat tricks and the building will run out of hats. Downie will suplex the goalie after setting up al 16 of Giroux's goals. The message board will explode with excitement. Those who doubted the trade will hang their heads in shame and face the wrath of a thousand burning emoticons.

Nobody has stated any of that. Only that player for player, it's a good trade.

Honestly, I don't see why this trade is THIS much of a big deal and that is coming from a huge Talbot fan. you would think the FLyers just moved Voracek for Downie.

That's valid. There are certainly varying degrees of assessing downie's value in a positive light, just as there are in a negative light. I just think it's pretty clear Downie is a top 9 forward no matter how you swing it. Can't really say much else to his skill set or role until we see more games from him with the team.

Look at games played Joe. And his average scoring totals. Adds up to a top 9 player.

Because the flyers moved a piece that was helping them, albeit quietly, for a pice that I quite frankly will shoot them in the foot on a regular basis.

It will be interesting to me to see the fans reaction at the game. Do you think he will be booed by home fans? According to Tim, the vast majority of the fan base feels the same way you do. My personal feeling is that we won this trade from a hockey standpoint and I am willing to give him another chance. From what I have seen, he is not the same player he was the first time around, but it doesn't look like some people believe that's true.. which is fine.

If he helps us win, I don't think people will complain...

after having 24 hrs (well almost) to digest the trade, I am on board and boarderline excited at the thought of having Downie back and seeing where he fits in (def want to see Downie-G-Bunny). My feelings don't change about being sad to see Talbot go but I like what this move does to the top 9.

I've enjoyed watching Colorado and they will definitely be my western team to root for

Who, Giroux? Not sure how much flopping you can do from the perimeter.
- BulliesPhan87

see the last game, embellished perfectly from along the boards

and the refs only called the unsportsmanship penalty and not the fake cross check, kudos to them for getting it right

5 minors in 11 games isn't awful. But when you consider how often the Flyers are short-handed to begin with it becomes a concern. With Talbot being one of the better PK guys on the team it's definitely an issue.

Obviously there was a need to upgrade the skill level among the forwards, Downie is better offensively than Talbot. I would have preferred a more "traditional" skill player, but Talbot isn't going to fetch a player of that ilk. If Downie doesn't go off the reservation I think it can be a good trade.

I don't look it at that way because as we saw just this season McGinn was on pace for about 30 goals at one point... A lot of times when a player plays more games those averages drop off.
