Staals and Girardi's numbers tell a different story. They are a combined what -18 with 2 points between them

- sbroads24

i forgot that +/- is the most reliable stat in hockey and that a defenseman's #1 priority was scoring points.

if you remember correctly, we've had a few blowout games where the entire team, from the net out, played like poop and we let up like 19 total goals and scored 2. but those are just 3 games and totally skewed their +/- and the team's goals against. the other 8, they've been really good and have totally shutdown ovechkin, tavares, kopitar, etc.

It's not. But it can be used as an indicator. Usually the player with the worst +/- on the team isnt playing the best hockey of their career.

Girardi has been mostly out of sorts so far. He was Torts boy, I have confidance he'll return to form in time. Staal has been fair, they both need to be better for sure, as do many Rangers. By everyone's surprise the best Ranger so far has been Richards.

again, the sharks game (9-2), ducks game (6-0), and devils game (4-0) all dramatically fcked their +/-'s. obviously, they were awful those games and their +/-'s from those games are accurate depictions of the way they players, but in almost every other game, they've played well. it's an 82 game season, not an 11 game season.

I think Staal has been pretty good, but I think Girardi game has dipped a bit. He still has plenty of time to get it back, but I don't think he is near the level he played at when he was an All Star in the '11-12 season.

I understand. I said the Rangers were better, just not sure how much better they are. I don't personally think they are too uneven, especially without Nash and Callahan. With them there is defintitely a considerable difference in talent. You can include Hagelin too

its dipped but i think he's still playing as a top-pairing Dman. still logging huge minutes, tough as ever, shutting down very talented players, and making minimal mistakes.

No, if you are giving up a package like that I want an established dominant scorer. RNH and Yakupov have tons of potential to be great but you can say the same thing about Stepan. He still has room to grow and get better.

I think that contract the Oilers gave RNH is ridiculous

I am definitely willing to talk Yakupov

His comments earlier in the year where he said he doesn't like to play physical and work for the puck and would rather just play with the puck on his stick scares me off. I don't remember the exact quote but it was something like that.

I agree but I also consider that English is not his first language so perhaps it didn't come out quite the way he meant it. It did sound as if he wasn't interested in doing anything on the ice aside from carrying the puck and scoring.

Yea true the language barrier might have misquoted him a bit, but still a red flag especially for the package it would probably take to land him.

In order to make a significant trade, you have to look at teams that may be willing to trade with you. Looking at the Rangers, you have to look at teams like Dallas, Winnipeg, Florida, Edmonton and perhaps Calgary. There may be one or two others, depending on the players and the teams position in the standings. I thought the Girardi/Franson swap made to much sense, so that will never happen.

the rangers are 4-7-0 through 11 games with a -19 goal differential
the sabres are 2-11-1 through 14 games with a -18 goal differential

Both teams have started the season horribly.....but How exactly are the Rangers the much more superior team that the author seems to imply?

- nikel

What I wrote in the blog was: "You never like to let a team that you believe is inferior to you hang around, giving them confidence to pull an upset." The pronoun you here refers to the Rangers, as I believe they feel they are a much better team that Buffalo. We as fans of the Rangers also believe we are a better team, though I agree they have underachieved to date, as noted by the goal differential, despite it being based on three horrible games. In addition, based on perspective and expectations for the year, New York still feels they can contend for a playoff spot and ultimately advance far in the playoffs, while the Sabres have a different goal in mind. So to clarify, not saying right now they definitely are much superior but the belief internally and amongst the fanbase is they are.

it's funny. you go to the oilers thread, and during and after the games they literally say sh!t like "Yakupov was on the ice for all 4 goals and was flat-footed or cherry picking for 3 of them. the other one, he was way too selfish to clear the puck out of the zone with a simple play and directly caused the turnover that led to a goal! he will never ever be a good nhl player like that he fcking sucks!"

and then "yakupov will only be traded for 3 stars and a 1st round pick cuz he's so good."

It's always Stafford at MSG...so annoying.

I think Hank holds up well tonight and the Rangers sneaking mayube two or three by Miller tonight.

What is it about MSG that turns scrubs into superstars? I don't get it.

There it is, a Sabres fan in denial that his team sucks and they are a bunch of goons
