I don't need convincing, I understand the thought process behind it. Doesn't mean I have to like it. As you said, CBC is hedging their bets most in BC will watch it regardless of the early start time. For the most part I think they're right, but they will lose some viewership because some people can't get off work in time and they'll just say (frank) it.

I hear ya, and that sucks for a number of Canucks fans, but like anything else, you can never satisfy everyone.

Sure, they'll lose some viewership of West, but what they gain in the East far outweighs that. Just the cost of doing business, I guess.

Not to mention it's Bure night...so a lot of people from BC will want to watch it because of that. It's pretty much a win win for CBC no matter how you look at it.

My wife has to cut out of work early so we can get a ferry to get over to the game, it's an inconvenience to us. But, we're still going because of the Bure night. One of my all-time favorites on the the ice!!!

Exactly.

Let's not forget that the CBC and League are also playing off the strength of the Canucks/West Coast market as well and feel that they can adjust the scheduled based on this.

Its not about what the real market is. Its about what will generate the biggest TV audience. There is a reason why this game is scheduled also for a saturday night and not a wednesday night. The wednesday game would get a solid TV rating but check the tv rating on this game it could be one of the biggest tv games of the season. That just doesn't happen if its at 7pm. The east coast will be out and about and the TV product for the advertisers will be worth less.

So we in the west coast just need to get over it. If we had a bigger TV audience than the east coast guess what they would cater to us more. But in terms of TV audience its not even close when you compare East coast vs West.

What about the local economy? Restaurants, bars & pubs ect. count on the evening game to generate more revenue. Having worked for years at a high end restaurant in downtown Vancouver, i saw first hand how an evening game on any day of the week generates a big swell in spending both before and after the game.
Alienating a region and a fan base is pretty sad for a 'national' carrier. Anyway, CBC, probably won't have hockey rights much longer and I hate their biased, Canuck-hating ass-hat commentators any how.

This isn't about the local economy. This is about what will generate the best TV audience. The reality is the game at 7pm EST generates more. If Vancouver can prove as a whole they will boycott the game and not watch because of it I garauntee that it will change the time slot next time around.

I worked at a restaurant as well. Not a high end one but was a bartender at Joeys and earls for a few years. The 4pm games were annoying and it did effect the sales slightly but people still watched and our local earls and joeys was still pretty busy.

Even if TSN or SPortsnet has the game they would still change the time slot. Who has the game doesn't matter.

Toronto & the CBC need more apologists like you to keep patting us on the head while telling us it's in the best interests of the league and the game to treat the host city like the red-headed step-child that nobody really likes. You and As_I_See_It should consider double-dating.

Come on dude, seriously. We both know Vancouver has an excellent market and a rabid fan base, it's just not on the same level has Toronto or Montreal. I'd say there are three tiers of Canadian markets:

Tier 1: Toronto & Montreal
Tier 2: Vancouver, Edmonton & Calgary
Tier 3: Winnipeg & Ottawa

All of the Canadian markets are strong in comparison to the majority of the American markets, though they too have some serious fan bases in New York, Boston, Philly, Chicago and Detroit. After that it drops off significantly.

I'm pretty sure Vancouver has a much larger following than the Alberta teams, based on the fact that Edm and Cal need to share rural Alb fans, and bothe Cal and Edm are smaller. Van is a bigger city and gets all of BC's rural fans too.

Of course Edm has alot of leftover fans from the Gretzky era, spread out across Canada.

Jeff Brown is in town for tomorrow's festivities. Maybe he can give Kesler some pointers on how to keep things on the DL next time.

LOL. Not an apologist just a realist. I am a huge Nfl fan and this sort of stuff is just common practice. When you are a big time league which the NHL should want to be you cater to your big markets to generate the most revenue. When the NHL sees the revenue its game generates they can get a better TV Contract which in turn makes the game stronger and more profitable for ALL the franchises.

The NHL needs to do more in terms of manufacturing higher ratings like having an all canadian matchup or a huge rivalry game every saturday.

Come on Fosco. I know you wouldn't when your salary is based on it. So when CBC says Señor Fosco we can give you 10mil or 7 mil. But you need to get the highest TV ratings. Your time slot changes for sure.

But also remember its not about the RABID fan base. The RABID fan base watches this game if its at 1am. They are trying to the casual fan to tune in thats where the ratings take a huge spike or not. The casual fan in TO is just larger than the casual fan in Van. The casual fan in Ontario at 11pm is at the bar on a saturday night but at 7pm he is watching the game at the local restaurant or at home with his buddies before they go out.

Sorry Chipper, I stand by what I said.

Somebody else pointed out yesterday, how come the Leafs other west coast games at 7?

Doesn't CBC lose out on those as well? How come they're not at 4?

A decent compromise would be 5:30. Then west coasters can catch the game and easterners can still get to their bars by 11ish.

The catering is just too much, especially for a station that's publicly funded by the entire nation, for a match that's supposed to be a home game for the western team.
