No question about it. Hard to figure how someone who is always preaching that the Flyers are an easy team to play against, and wants the team to play with emotion and fire, and on the edge. Doesn't like the Downie acquisition.

besides the fact that we were always downie fans and were glad to hear he came back, first thing my husband said is flyers just got harder to play against

my favorite part is if this was the other way around and they traded Downie for Talbot, the same people would be whining that they brought in an aging grinder and gave up on a young player

I think this is a key point. And in adding that element we also add someone who can put points up.

When I first heard of the deal I must say I was a bit shocked. But that was clouded by my ignorance of the player Downie has become. I still had in my mind the picture of the guy who was undisciplined, and took too many penalties, and that the Flyers didn't need another one of that type of player. The rest of the day had shown me that maybe I needed to rethink my position.

I think he may be a great fit for Couturier.

What kind of player would you say they need right now?

The question then becomes can you get that type of player for Talbot?

In the short term the Flyers do get a better player.

One they will have to give 3+million at season's end.

When they could have just waited until he hit UFA status and dealt Talbot at the deadline when teams are more desperate. Its a short term move. Holmgren is licking his chops at being able to overpay for another mediocre player.

- flyer_nutter

the Flyers got the better player but Downie is mediocre? Regardless the Flyers are 11 games into the season. the last thing they should be or would be thinking about now is who to move at the trade deadline. Homer is going to make moves to improve the team so they can compete. I don't like trading Talbot because I really like him and what he brings but I am ok with Downie. I think they traded an older 4th line, PK specialist for a top 9 younger forward. the only aspect I don';t like is the UFA status of Downie

If you asked me yesterday I would have said you can't get Downie for Talbot. Not really sure that has anything to do with it. I'm not opposed to having Downie on the team. He seems like he has some offensive upside, plays physical for a smallish guy and he has a knack for holding on to the puck. I just don't think he's the type of player this team needs right now. If were going to pick up another smallish forward I'd prefer he has more speed and skill.

He may not be physically big, but he doesn't play a small game. He's noted to be a physical winger who is good in board battles and has the hands to make plays. And I'm not sure why you think that what player the Flyers traded, doesn't have anything to do with it. Because you're not going to get a good speedy skilled winger or a mobile puck moving defenseman for Talbot. If you feel that swapping Talbot for Downie makes the team better, why not make the deal?

So it lessens the blow of trading Simmonds or Hartnell...

I don't have a problem with the deal. I said, I think the Flyers got the better of the deal. I was just responding to an earlier comment about why Flyer's fans are dissapointed with the trade.

I misunderstood then. That's not your feeling, you're just trying to speculate on why some fans may be disappointed. Gotcha!

I am all for trading Simmonds. Can't stand watching him play anymore. I know he's a heart and soul guy, but his skating and stick handling are so bad it hurts me to watch him.

Right. Tho I do feel the disappointment that the Flyers didn't get what I feel they need I don't think it was a bad trade. If that makes sense?

With the players this team has they need to play on the edge. They will be most effective intimidating and getting in their opponents face for the the full 60 mins. Guys like Simmonds, Hartnell, Downie, Rinaldo are most effective when they play with a snarl and make the opponents life miserable. This should clear up space for Giroux, Voracek, Vinnie, Read to play their game.

he's rounded into a good plyr. strong stick along the wall...should project to being a 15-20 goal/yr plyr depending on how he's used.

don't want him and rinaldo in the same lineup though, because there could be a dumb quotient force multiplier effect.

Ahhh Morin lost didn't take the man out in front of the net, puck goes through his feet to another player who scores.
