The rest of the league has to be laughing at this deal. From any outsider's point of view the Avs win the trade hands down, with Philly throwing a dumbass clown into the line-up.

The Avs being on fire made this deal why? To give Philly a favour? Out of all the players on their winning team they found Downie to be expendable in the re-build. Maybe that should say something.

don't know if i'm ready to downgrade in order to dump contracts yet. i think harts def has a bad contract, but he'd be more likely to spearhead a turnaround than hemsky, who'd be inviting G for cocktails away from the crease.

Not laughing? I haven't heard or read anywhere yet that anyone is doing anything but scratching their head over why the Avs would trade Downie to the Flyers for Talbot. I've heard everything from confusing to fleeced.

The only place I've read anything negative about the Downie trade is on these threads and I'm taking names.

The smart move here is to wait until season's end, and maybe to see what Downie does in the playoffs (If Avs make them). The smart long term move is to trade Talbot at the deadline.

Say what you will about the Flyers being able to hold off on re-signing Downie or deadling him at the deadline. We all know a nice extension is coming the first hot streak he hits.

Why is the smart move to wait until the deadline? By that time the Flyers could be out of a playoff spot. If Holmgren feels this makes the team better, then why not make the move? If Downie warrants an extension with his play, then what's the problem? Not reading a lot of sense here.

You're comparing a contract that is actually in place, to a hypothetical contract that as of now doesn't exist. Doesn't make a lot of sense.

3-3.5M is peanuts in today's NHL. If Downie turns out to be a good fit here, and will sign for that, what's the problem? It would be asinine not to.

The downside risk of this deal, if Downie turns out to be a negative on the roster, is completely mitigated by the fact that they aren't tied to him past this season.

That alone, should be enough to make people all of the resident accountants happy.

As for the on ice stuff, I have an open mind about Downie possibly having dialed back his game. I just don't know where he fits.

Again, just message board talk. As was pointed out last night, Hartnell has 11 points in his last 39 games played -- that would scare anyone.

Yea. Maybe, look at Edmonton. How'd ovechkin and semin work out together? They are similar players that are the same role. For a team that's always wanted to deploy a 3rd checking line. I wonder about the mix

I think Giroux, Vorachek and Lacavalier on a team are redundant. We should go ahead and move one for a player that does something else.
