i see it's all negative in here, i love downie
- -davies-

not at all negative

I see the trade a win

Max is a great character and would be a perfect 4th liner on a playoff bound team

Flyers aren't playoff bound

Downie makes them better immediately

If he suks or plays too stupid, hasta la vista UFA

Roy was quoted as saying they wanted to improve their penalty kill, thats why they dealt for Talbot.

The Flyers need to improve scoring. Downie has played on first lines in both Tampa and Colorado. He can play Giroux's wing.

Deal makes more sense for the Flyers than it does for the Avalanche. Seems like Colorado overpaid.

- flyers2001

Yeah Roy said Talbot would step in for injured McLeod, one of their other PK guys

It was mostly tonge in cheek pal. But if they are talking to edmonton or St.Louis it is likely going to invlove one of those guys.... Yakupov, Hemsky, Jbo, or Halak. Maybe a mix.

Holy poop, that's a lot of ways to say Downie is a joke.

I have to admit, I'm really struggling to wrap my mind around the hate for Steve Downie.

He was a young player when he got moved from here, and we were a better team. He had to learn discipline, which he has -- only a one-game suspension since he was traded. Noted tough guy Harry Zolniercyzk has been suspended for more games than Steve Downie since 2008.

In Steve Downie's last full season of games played in the NHL in 2011-12, he had 121 penalty minutes -- or just seven more minutes than Wayne Simmonds, from that same year.

We've had trouble scoring for all of last season and have set a record for futility this season...and acquired a guy who has enough ability to play with Steven Stamkos, Martin St. Louis, Matt Duchene, Gabriel Landeskog and Ryan O'Reilly.

We literally have acquired a player who has 42 points in his last 77 games played in the NHL -- that's just 10 fewer points than Brayden Schenn has in his entire CAREER -- and just three fewer than Sean Couturier in his...and some of us are steaming mad about this?

A team that is literally STARVING for scoring -- STARVING -- and we're this angry?

I liked Maxime Talbot as a fourth-line player and penalty killer. He was good at those roles. And I'm not dismissing the value of that.

But at the same time, the Flyers have been one of the best penalty killing teams in the league ever since Ken Hitchcock was here. We weren't a clown show on the PK before Maxime Talbot got here, and we won't be one now that he's gone.

Where we were the clown show was on offense, where we almost reached a modern-day era record for offensive incompetence.

We got a legitimate Top 9 forward who has done nothing to deserve the criticisms for being an undisciplined player for FIVE YEARS.

That's what this deal is. What Downie does or doesn't do, he'll show on the ice.

But he's not a goon, he's a better hockey player than at least four forwards we have currently and maybe five, and he's likely going to help us win more games than we were -- we're 3-8! He's not going to make us worse!

Talbot 1.75 Million. Possibly dealt at the deadline.

Downie 3+million/year extension.

Water pistol to your ear. What do you choose?

Talbot

Then the water pistol. To both ears.

We traded a fourth line player on the worst team in the league for a first line player on the best team in the league.

Horrible trade for us. Holmgren should be fired. Downie's games hasn't changed in 5 yrs. Talbot can win us a Cup. I love BC4.

How would you guys feel if the Flyers just swap Hartnell for Hemsky? Hartnell being from EDM and close cap hits. But Hemsky is UFA, and gives EDM help on left side and in front of net.

I wasn't around the boards when JVR, Richards and Carter got moved, but if we're this pissed off about moving one guy off a roster of a 3-8 hockey team, I can't imagine the rage if this team actually makes a move to seriously upgrade the talent level.

When Snider was commenting on Lavi getting fired he said it was the Players not the coach. Since Berube came in, the have improved a bit but are not showing any results. Snider said that if this doesnt work then you have to start making changes to the team... I think this is step 1. I think Edmonton and St.louis are steps 2 and 3. Its going to be interesting to say the least.
