If we really traded Talbot to help out offense, and Downie is placed on the fourth line, Homer should be shot in the face.

I understand you think its a bad trade, care to share why you think that...
- phi1671

I really dont believe Downie will make any real impact, Talbot is a heart and soul player with good checking and penalty killing. Thats why the flyers signed him to begin with, his 19 goals the other season was a big bonus. Downie is irresponsible. Not what this team needs. We also lose speed in this trade.

Seen a lot of posts like this in this thread. To those worried about the Flyers scoring, The net improvement in scoring from Downie will be offset by the loss of PK ability and intangibles that a guy like Talbot brought. Its only slightly better than a zero sum gain and I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that if your top line guys like Giroux aren't putting the puck in the net, it doesn't really matter what the bottom 6 guys do.
- Emperor Filonius

Talbot fan right here and hasn't watched to Western Conference team play since he fell asleep while the Pens were blowing out the Flyers and woke to the Canucks/Kings game.

We're 3-8? When did that happen?

We'll see what happens. Don't hate it, don't love it.

But we all know Downie is a better offensive player and better equipped to play with top tier talent.

They gave up a good player in Talbot, but they acquired a good player in Downie. They both just do different things. I think they both have fairly similar value, but this team needs more offense.

- PhillySportsGuy

I understand that. The oft-injured Steve Downie, who hasn't played 60 games since the 2009/2010 season, to me, does not had an overall on-and-off ice package that will equal Max Talbot's. Add to that fact that Talbot has one more year left on a relatively low cap hit and Downie is a UFA, and I am pissed. Like, I am visibly pissed off right now.

I've watched him a bit since he has been gone and I think he is a much better player since then and I don't dislike getting him BUT I hate moving Talbot. 1.75 is not unreasonable and under contract for 2 more years. He is a blood and guts guy every winner can use. put me in the same category that I was for Schenn for JVR. Like the acquisition, HATE what it took to get the player. I am not happy losing Talbot. not one bit
- nastyflyergirl

at least downie is the better plyr in this case.

How do you lose speed in this trade? You haven't watched downie play a shift this season I'd wager. Seriously, when you get a clue come on back.

I'd be fine with getting Hall back in the lineup at Rosehill's expense.

The prolific offensive dynamo known as Steve Downie has a grand total of 1 goal playing on one of the most successful teams in the league.

Again, the way we were doing it wasn't working. I have read your posts and I can see you're upset, but at some point, I would hope that you might acknowledge that the roster we had 24 hours ago wasn't good enough.

Doesn't mean that Maxime Talbot had to go -- again, I recognize and acknowledge his value as a PKer.

But we can't keep the same roster, keep running the same guys out there every night, and pray for miracles.

S. Cooper had an interesting post in Eklund's main blog about the Blues heavily scouting the Flyers.

I'm calling it now, they're going to give Rinaldo a look on the PK. I also think Hall is basically being phased out of the lineup, more or less. He will be a spot-player now, I think.

You lose some leadership with Max leaving, but Downie plays with a lot of passion.

And I don't see the loss of speed here at all, to be honest.

"More to come. Flyers still talking to Edmonton and St. Louis. Both on very serious levels I am told."

This atually makes sense. I dont see the purpose of a talbot for downie move. Talbot does not seem like a player that would have been slacking, so this cant be a wake-up call. Maybe they are upset he didn't continue to score like his first year....

The only thing I can think is that there is more to come, and we are about to see major changes here.

Can't say I'm too upset...

Steve Downie, when he's not injured, has a better offensive skillset than Talbot. Steve Downie, when not running around and taking horrible penalties, hits harder than Max Talbot.

That's about it. We lose defense. We lose PK ability. We lose a guy whose heart and determination are on the same level (but slightly below) the beloved Lappy. We lose a guy who will do whatever it takes to win. We lose a guaranteed reasonable contract. We lose a veteran locker room leader.

But hey, Downie has 1 goal this season. Let's throw him on the 4th line and win the Cup!
