It was Jeff Carter supposedly sleeping with Hartnell's wife (soon to be ex).

BTW, thought you just agreed to turn off the condescension in a post to Al? Then you immediately turn around with your Thomas comment.

People have a right to post their opinion here without your snide comments. You are an almost constant source of poison on this thread. Someone posts a question and you smart ass about using google. Someone suggests a trade and you post to someone else how stupid the poster is.

There are at least 5 other posters here who PM'd me to agree you are a know it all a$$hole and post too much. Particularly your constant worthless one word responses. This is OK occasionally but you typically do it 30 times a day.

I will summarize it one more time for you.... If even one team held back on signing Thomas because of his political beliefs or because of negative press attention due to his beliefs it WOULD BE WRONG. Someone pointed out Khhabibulin's lucrative offers after his layoff the other day. DiPietro was just signed to a tryout deal and may be called up to Carolina this weekend FORCHRISSAKE! There is no way Thomas should not have received more offers.

Now, for a final time GFY.

Virginia's great! Lived there for a few years as a kid. Looking for time to go down there with my wife to go to Williamsburg, Monticello, etc.

Williamsburg is fun - and good restaurants, both in the Colonial area and outside. They've shown the same orientation movie - with the guy from Hawaii Five-0 - for 60 years.

Also Charlottesville and the University.

Basically it is a tool....
- Al

>Yes, indeed -- just a tool
>Nothing can replace the savvy gained from watching thousands of games -- especially live
>But -- hockey has always lagged behind other sports in the innovation department -- remember how long it took to get equipment that weighed less than a ton?
>Regarding a specific example of how stats can be a tool -- Kariya of the Ducks couldn't understand why his goal totals were not amongst the NHL leaders -- then he, himself, looked at shot totals of the leaders and saw he was like 150 or more attempts less
>The next year and thereafter he shot the puck and shot the puck and shot the puck -- and scored a lot of goals

Speaking from personal experience, couple years in Warren County. Yep.
- Beaver-Warrior

Warren County absolutely sucks. The landscape is wonderful, it has some great lands and a few cool wineries, but it has nothing else going for it...if a horrific school system and religious zealots is your bag it's great.

Sedin Sisters signed for $7 MIL/year.... Hopefully that means the #'s for 19/88 won't be too much higher...

The Sedins are also a 8 or 9 years older than Toews & Kane. I'd set the median for those two at about $8 million, plus or minus $350,000.

Agreed....plus the fact they've won two cups......that's a lot of money to give two guys who will be 37 at the end of that contract. Gillis incompetence strikes again.....

The incompetence is that Gillis had no choice but to re-sign the Sedins for that much. If he lets them walk the Canucks go into a total rebuild mode and Gillis isn't that type of GM (look at his draft record). So Gills keeps his job and re-ups the twins.

I think Kesler walks when his deal is done.

I agree...I just think Gillis is putting off the inevitable. He flubbed the Schneider/Luongo situation. Yes he got a first round pick for Schneider but shot himself in the foot by telling everyone Luongo won't be back. He lost any leverage he had and got the bare minimum in return for a potential franchise goal tender.

Good job on the posts today, Pards. Some good info on metrics. One thought, though, is that stats might be subject to confirmation bias. Not saying you are doing this (although almost all humans do) in your examples, but forming the opinion first and then searching for stats to support that opinion leads to confirmation bias. Not trying to be a richard at all; you have well thought-out posts, imo.

What do you think about this Toronto issue with the metrics? I've read that they are the Anti-stats crowd's favorite team and that the Pro-stats crowd is praying they begin to soil the bed. Curious what others think.

- mohel

I truly believe in the possession metrics as an indicator of future success. That's not to a say a team like Toronto, who possesses both elite finishing and very good goaltending, can't be successful. Often, those who believe that numbers like Fenwick and Corsi are the best indicator of future success (like me), chalk up a high shooting or save percentage to simple variance, and expect it to regress to a player's career average, or league average in terms of save %. There have been arguments, from mostly Toronto fans, but also people who are anti-stat, that Toronto only gives up shots from the outside, while being patient and only shooting when there is a real chance to score. A Leaf fan then did a study to see if the Leafs were attempting shots from closer to the net than their opponents, and the conclusion was they were, but it was by about six inches (based on NHL shot tracking data, while maybe not perfect, has to be at least close). So, do I think the Leafs are a bad team, no. I think they're probably a bottom seeded playoff team. Do I think they can win the Cup, not a shot in heck.

Also thanks for the kind words. I know I like it here on this board because it provides me with different views on the game, and isn't the point of sports really to bring people together?

I disagree - It is never good to go to rebuild, but face it - even when they were the President's cup winner, they were a flawed team. If the fans are that nieve (sp) to think the Sedins are the only players to keep, then you sign them. But I would think that some of them understand that it is time to rebuild there. Gillis just bought 4 more years of being a good team. That is all.

Too bad he has two years left on his deal. He would look nice in the 2C slot with an Indianhead jersey.
