Here's the thing with Dion. He's not the ideal #1 dman, but he is a better #1 than alot of Dmen out there. Let's look at Seabrook, sound defensively, no offense. Or letang, great offensively, bad defensively. Dion does a bit of everything (one of the top 2 or 3 active scoring dmen since he came into the league, and always tops amongst hits). To say he's not elite is a little biased i say, kind of like when people USED to laugh and say '2 1sts and a second for kessel ". There are definately dmen i'd take over Dion, but to say he's not elite doesn't fly. His mistakes are magnified because he's in Toronto and he plays so damn much.

Just a small correction, Seabrook believe it or not is one of 6 d-men to be on a 40 point/200 hit pace during last year's shortened season. He's got an offensive game. But I often wonder what Dion would be like if he had a Suter/Keith or someone of that ilk beside him. Right now though, he's been one of the feel good stories of this leaf team for sure.

Seabrook is, but not over his career. He's a great fantasy player for sure, but it's not consistent for him to be huge offensively.

Well that's the thing, offering him 3 years is basically as good as not making an offer at all. If they want to keep him they'll have to pony up with term and dollars, that's a fact. Honestly, I don't know what Nonis is going to do. My gut says he bites the bullet and resigns him but who really knows...
- Jeffmt

I think so too... He'll get his term but maybe thats where Dion will need to compromise is the salary.

Thats the challenge though right? Finding a partner that'll allow him to play and not worry about the holes in his game (Game 7 last year). those guys are as hard to find as the elite D. And if the Leafs play hardball, is there anyone out there to trade for that brings the same upside?

im crossing my fingers for dan girardi. UFA, nyr is in shambles. Perfect fit for the leafs. Leafs need a shutdown D or we don't go far come playoff time.

Hopefully the top guys aren't too tired, I don't think they had more than 2 shifts after 4-0... It was all the bottom 6.

Wouldn't you rather throw that money at Franson? Clearly it can't be both of them?

Standard trap game.

Reimer or Bernier will need to be real good early to give the Leafs a chance.

Franson has been rather sloppy this year, so far.

Why can't we bring both back? The cap's going up and we gain a bunch of cap space back from Tucker/Armstrong/Frattin/Scrivens, plus Liles will likely either be gone or a much smaller cap cost. Franson (RFA) won't cost what Dion will cost.

i hate throwing out offers. However, if NYR keep sucking, Lundqvist has not signed and i think he's waiting to see how it shapes up. We have goalies to offer, prospects, roster players (Kule, a package for gardiner, etc.).

Girardi would be huge for us.

I agree, granted he wouldn't command as big a contract as Dion will though.

If it was down to Dion at 7-8 or Franson at say 4-5, I'm curious as to what Leaf fans would prefer?

Do you guys have anyone close to becoming a #1 D if neon Dion were to leave?

If we send Gards I would do straight up for girard I just because he the perfect fit style and age wise. What hand does he shoot? Deal contingent on if he re signs with leafs.

If that's we're we are at I would still take Dion I think, he's just too important to the defensive core. I prefer him at 6 mill but the way contract are going for number 1 d, probably not likely.

Gardiner straight up for Girardi? I don't think that would happen. Girardi is heart and soul.

Ya I think true value would be about 5.5ish, but you are right, not gonna happen!
