Why did you skip the top 2 teams in the west? - HuileHab
They're one and two points ahead of the Canucks, also, San Jose has such a deep lineup compared to the Canucks I think Hank has SO FAR been more valuable to his team than any one Shark player. As for Colorado, I haven't watched them enough to give an informed opinion. |

you don't need to be top of the standings imo.
but some team success is paramount, which then begs the question; where is this team without said player?
the nucks aren't a bad team but are they upper echelon without hank? probably not.
same goes for stamkos. but even a step further perhaps. tbay might actually be terrible without him |

What a joke. How much suckier would his 5-7 team be without him? And who would care? After 12 games, Duchene more valuable than Ovechkin, by a mile. |

Crosby gets my vote at this point in the season, followed by Stamkos then maybe O.V. |

Crosby is more valuable to the Penguins then most people think. Interesting stat:
Crosby has been on the ice for 24 of the Penguins 38 goals (63%), which is a higher % then Stamkos (20 of 39, 51%) and Ovechkin (18 of 34, 53%) |

You do realize it is "Most valuable player", not "Best player", right? How valuable is anyone on a 5 and 7 team? |

You're joking, right?
Guy puts up points playing in a soft division, and still can't put together a decent record.
If he's the MVP, why not give Dubnyk the Vezina for trying.

no question he's important. he's the best player in the world. but when hes not playing, do they struggle to score, or do the goals get spread around more?
do they fail to stay near the same spot in standings?
hell, they've got another player who's top 5 in the world too. who's also won a hart. how can they have 2 mvps?
id argue malkins was well deserved by carrying the team during crosbys absence |

MVP should just be the best player, not 'Most Valuable'. - StaalsnUrinals
so then it would just be BP, not giving the MVP to the most "valuable" player seems kind of stupid, no? |

well sorry, hes had like 3 NHL seasons and was hurt for basically an entire season.
so yeah like 25% of his career he has been hurt.
i thought it was 2 years, but like u said it was ankel and groin same season...thats something, wouldnt you say? - big_dion
This is his 5th season, and he missed a grand total of 24 games that one season. Hurt his ankle, tried to play through it, then hurt his groin bc he favoured his ankle coming back too early.
I think playing 92% of the possible games he has been in the league. Yeah injury plagued for sure. |

Edit: Anyone think gvt should be taken into consideration? It does defense, offense, shootout. Guess it doesn't cover quality of the team they play for, line mates and other intangibles so gvt would never be taken seriously in everyone's eyes but maybe as a tie-breaker. |

People laughed when I suggested Duchene had a really good chance at making the Canadian Olympic team. If he keep up this pace, I'd say he's a lock. He's making plays, scoring, solid two way game and wins the majority of the faceoffs.
That being said, the MVP is almost always given to the player who gets the most goals or points. Barring no major setbacks this year, it goes to Sid, hands down. - Canuckleafer

gvt is a reasonable idea for tiebreaker and such.
I think it might actually already be in some cases, at least in a non tangible way if you follow.
eg; perrys win over sedin in 2011 although he had less points.
he dominated the bulk of the year without getzlaf, while sedin had the best team in the league alongside him. as well as his brother who was also an elite player and the reigning mvp...?????
but at the end of the day, my original point was that I don't think d sedin shoulda even been nominated. a decent argument coulda made he wasn't even the most valuable on his own team. doesn't this completely exclude a player? |

Gets shutdown by half an ahl defense in Calgary and then is invisible in van city .... An MVP would have sniped the penalty shot |

Duchene. Has one goal less than Ovi so far, with half the shot attempts. And is the #1 center on a 10-1 team. |
