No thank you. People will have the same emotions toward Subban when he's Phaneuf's age. They play a similar style, and I see Subban's career planing out like how Dion's has.

Look at that bottom 6 - what a difference Lupul and Kuli make to this line up.

Make a playoff run this year with him, try and bring his price tag down asap in the off season or trade his rights for anything come the draft. It's not a debate of what other teams will give him. It's about the Leafs finally being rid of poopty contracts that hand cuffedthem over the last 15 years.

Ott for Bozak!

JVR-Kadri-Kessel
Lupul-Bolland-Clarkson
Kulimen-Ott-Raymond
Orr-Mcclement-Fraser

I like that lineup even though I don't like Ott haha.

I know I'm late to the party, but I have to say this anyway.

He's a Leaf for the past 3+ seasons and he's a shadow of the player who signed the big 6.5milly contract, the most overrated player in the league as voted by his peers, and his contract is choking the Leafs options under the cap.....

Now he's played well for the first 11 games of his contract year and he's all of a sudden irreplaceable, logs big minutes, shuts down the best player in the world, and is worth being the the 3rd highest paid defenceman in the league (world?).

From what I've seen, he has played his best hockey as a Leaf to start this season, and I wonder where this was vs Boston last year. He's a great 2way D-man up to about 23 minutes a game. After that, he becomes a complete mess.

The Leafs can't replace what he gives them in a trade or on the UFA market next year, but how long is he going to keep this level of play up after he's guaranteed 50+mill through age 36? Not very long is what I'm worried about.

The logical option, IMO, is to cash out on him in a trade; the league's perception of him as a player will never be higher. The Leafs could get a young D with Dion potential, plus a pick or more, and it frees up 6.5 million in cap space they can use to improve the team with a trade deadline rental player and/or UFAs in the off-season.

If that's his starting point he'll likely come down a little from there. Probably more like 6 - 6.5M
- Jeffmt

exactly... offer him 5.5/year for the max number of years(8?) or offer him 7/year for 5 years.

let him chose.

if his choice is not to sign to one of those type of options, then let him test free agency.... with the reputation he has (most overrated which I don't think makes any sense) he won't get many really lucrative offers unless they for teams that are weak.

Contradiction.

That's my whole point! Before this year he wasn't worth his contract. 11 games into this season, he's all of a sudden worth more! It doesn't make sense.
