They paid around 1.2 mil for the draft picks is what it comes to. NY also has the option to defer the #1 to 2015 if it is a top 10 pick.

Can Moulson be traded as well? If he doesn't resign swapping him at the deadline could get a good return as well.

I hope they sign him but yes he can be traded for a return. You can't have all young players and not any veterans for leadership. I don't know anything about Moulson other then what Islander fans said about him after the trade but off first impressions from Monday night I liked what I saw over and above scoring the 2 goals. He didn't stand around, crashed the net didn't have a problem clearing the puck nor keeping it in the Dallas zone. It's only one game but as the saying goes you only have one chance to make a first impression and Moulsons was a good one for me.

I don't think Vanek feels that the Sabres felt that Moulson was better. The Sabres just came to terms with the fact that Vanek didn't want to be here anymore. I can't blame him, but it was painfully obvious that he checked out.

I am a big fan of him, but this is where I have a problem with Vanek.

He is making a TON of money playing a sport that he loves and then he starts to mail it in?! It's a childish attitude that does not have any room in professional sports. You are of a select group in this world and should RESPECT the position you're in. This crap makes it a lot easier to stomach the loss of his talent.

I'm not disagreeing with your point but we are on the outside looking in. Vanek was surely on Minnesota's radar before Pomer was and Vanek stayed and Pomer went. We don't know what promises were made to Vanek and if they were kept or not. Hope he is happy now but it's time to move on for all.

The only promise a player has is his CONTRACT. All other verbal verbiage is tentative and not trustworthy.

Sabres win this deal hands down. The only way to build a team is with North American players. Darcy refuses to draft any though.....

Oh yeah? 1/2 of Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Boston, and Detroit probably would take issue with that...

Boston = 6 Non North Americans Out of 24 this season
Pittsburgh = 4 Non North Americans Out of 28 this season
Los Angeles = 2 Non North Americans out of 23 this season
Detroit = 11 Non North Americans out of 28 this season

But don't let facts get in the way of your statement...

You may be right but sometimes human nature takes over,,,lets say you are promised a promotion and a raise at work but after a couple of months you get nothing and a couple of your work mates get promoted and maybe one gets the job you were promised...I'm thinking you are not a happy camper and you won't be going to work with a good attitude.
I'm only speculating because Vanek never seemed happy from the time he was interviewed in Minnesota before camp opened.

Speculation time. Would Kessel come back for Vanek. Straight up trade? I don't know how I feel about that.

THIS SEASON

plus I'm more talking about Bergerons, Krecjis, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Zetterberg, Kopitar, Malkin, etc

What I;m trying to say is that some of their best guys are euros and they have mixes of both. A good hockey player is a good hockey player, this racist jingo-istic BS in the NHL is so stupid. Stafford is lazy and he's not russian but everyone hates the russians because they're always lazy. Bondra, Federov, Moginly, Bure, etc are not lazy. Hossa is one of the hardest working players on a team of hard working players. Again, good hockey players are good hockey players, no matter where they're from.

I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic because for years Sabres fans were bashing for only drafting North American players.

the option is for 2014 only,,,I'd rather have it in 2015
- Leninthebuff

This is GREAT news!
I would much rather have their 2015 pick
1) they're likely to lose Vanek, so they'll prob finish even worse than this year
2) the 2015 pick can help us move up for McDavid if we don't pick 1st

I do REALLY want Reinhart this year,
But it looks like we're already on pace for him
McDavid has to be a guy the Sabres are targeting

If McDavid really is all he's cracked up to be, why would the team that lands the first overall pick in 2015 trade it? I think the only way to land McDavid is to win the lottery and get the top pick in 2015 because whoever has it isn't trading it.

I mean, if the Sabres had the #1 pick in 2015, would you trade it for anything? I wouldn't. Well, I'd trade it for Crosby or Toewes. But anything less than that and I'm taking McDavid.

That being said, I still would prefer the NYI first in 2015 since that draft is supposedly much better than the 2014 draft. Either way, the conditional nature of the pick does not devalue it in any way as far as I'm concerned.

You're probably right... BUT...
Lets say this pick becomes a 2015 1st
By the deadline, we also trade Miller, Ott & Moulson... Each of whom, gets us at least a 1st IMO
If we can make those 1sts in 2015, that gives us FIVE, plus we have three 2nds
It would be awfully hard for any team to turn down the number of high picks we can throw at them
Maybe it still wouldn't be enough,
But at least it still gives us enough assets to have a reasonable shot at him if we don't win the lottery

I dont see them trading Ott. Not to mention I doubt either him or Moulson fetch a first at the deadline. Miller, yes, he would if there is a goalie market then.

Tyler Ennis, Tyler Myers and Marcus Foligno disagree. So do JT Compher, Connor Hurley, Justin Bailey and Nicholas Baptiste just to name some from the past few years.
