I think he needs a stronger defensive coach. He reminds me of Ehrhoff a bit when he came to Vancouver. Mess defensively but his offensive talent fit in the system really well. AV and Bowness worked like (frank) with him and he became a respectable defender without compromising the offence you needed.

As bad as people like to poop on Letang, Green, Karlsson, Subban, etc. for being bad defensively, they aren't really that bad. They're average to better than average defenders but they aren't bad.

You could see the same thing with Therrien and Subban last year. His defence improved leaps and bounds because they kept him more contained and less erratic defensively. With that calmness came the ability to dictate the play more and his offence has improved with it.
