That's a lot without an extension ..

Michael Russo
@Russostrib
No contract extension between Isles/Vanek, agent Steve Bartlett confirms. Rental move for now.

- opeth_pa

Wow, what an incredibly poor move. One of the most underrated players in the league in Moulson, a top prospect next year, and a good prospect the next year for 70 games of Vanek. I don't understand this one.

BREAKING: #Isles have traded Matt Moulson, their 2014 1st-round pick and a 2015 2nd-round pick to Buffalo for Thomas Vanek.

It will be interesting to see the Wild find room should they go after Vanek
- ob18

They could potentially lose $7 mil off the cap from Heatley, and the cap goes up $6mil+. They'll have lots of room if they want him.

EDIT: If they do sign him this offseason, they'll be the most mercenary team in the league: their 3 top players will all be UFA signings.

Yeah that was the "went to school" part

It will be interesting to see if they can do it cap wise. They do have both CBO's next summer.

I believe Minnesota used a CBO on Gilbert.

not to incite an HB riot, but this move by snow is right out of the homer playbook...

surely, they have spoken to vanek's agent about an extension or else
- isaiah520

It's...interesting.

They clearly must feel that, with the move to Brooklyn, Vanek might want to stay.

Yeah. That's thin.

Yeah...I get it, to an extent from the Isles view.

They're thinking that if Moulson can score 30 with Tavares, Vanek could maybe be a 45 goal scorer...also selling the possibility of playing with JT would be tempting to a lot of wingers.

But the Sabres got 1st & 2nd rounders, plus a 30 goal scorer, for a guy they were not going to re-sign anyhow.

They can probably trade Moulson for at least another 2nd and good prospect, if not more.

Maybe they knew Moulson wasn't resigning, so they tried to get another guy who wasn't... umm.... no that doesn't make too much sense either...

I seriously question whether those 1st and 2nd rounders they have up are worth the extra 15 goals...

And see, I can follow that logic...but holy cow. If you're the Islanders, you have got to sign Vanek. It's not that a team should be afraid to acquire talent. But oh, my gosh. You have got to sign the player.

Don;t be amazed if Moulson ends up back on the Isls this summer. He's good friends with Tavares and loved playing there.

and that video scouting has been working out ok, so all they have to do is show patience by properly developing these plyrs and they could be a powerhouse in....5 yrs

Well, the Sabres will still end up getting a lot for Vanek. If they can keep Moulson, they'll get a 3 time 30 goal scorer. If they trade him at the TDL or before, they'll likely get at least a good prospect and 2nd rounder.

So they would have gotten 1st, two 2nds and a good prospect for a guy, in Vanek, they had zero chance at keeping as a UFA. That's a good return, even if Moulson goes back to the NYI in summer

You know, the interesting thing about that is that last night, I did notice that it seemed like Tavares...well, I was thinking that, for whatever reason...it just seemed like he was a step ahead of his wingers. You know?

But I don't watch the Islanders enough to know if it just looks like that all the time, or what.

But maybe Garth Snow said "I'm not getting the maximum value out of this player by playing him with Matt Moulson."

It has to be something like that, right?

Widely rumored to be headed to the Wild in the offseason. Havent we heard this one before?

Weird trade for me. I'd rather have Moulson so the trade baffles my mind.

Yeah -- I mean, for all the whining I do about acquiring more talent, I sure as hell wasn't saying give up the farm for someone who's probably going somewhere else, you know?

I think Garth Snow's done a good job in being patient in the face of some tough years, and he's made tough decisions on players.

But man. I really like Vanek as a player, but you have to get something else back from Buffalo, if he walks. Even a B/C prospect.

Vanek has put up elite level numbers in the past when playing with top level talent. It's not a stretch to assume that he can score more with Tavares than Moulson was providing.

It's a ballsy move by Snow. If he gets Vanek and Vanek starts scoring 45-50 a year, he paid a lot but got a top level goal scorer for his franchise center.

And I think that kind of risk...is what a GM is paid to take.

Again, I don't watch the Isles enough to know what Matt Moulson is or does.

But I have seen Thomas Vanek enough to think that he could score 50 with the right kind of center...and Tavares might be that guy.

I mean, Zach Parise's the No. 1 LW in Minnesota. Maybe that's where Vanek would like to go, but hell, maybe he's thinking "I'd like playing with a Hart Trophy-caliber center and put up ridiculous numbers like James Neal," and not have to deal with any crap.

They still have some big holes elsewhere as well. Doesnt make sense to me why they made this kind of move right now.
