It's a process.

It would be more effective if the infraction was recognized and dealt with appropriately at that moment.

Losing a player for a period of time hurts if he's an important player, not so much if he's a pug. If the call is made when it should be and not sometime after the game, the ensuing penalty would probably be a more effective deterrent against such brain-dead moves.

Make the correct call in real time and penalize the team appropriately.

And stop giving out automatic game misconducts. Let 3 players get the guy in a corner and go to town on him, THEN suspend him.

Old time hockey. Let the players police themselves.

The Flyers coming off a long layoff going up against a team with several key players missing a backup making his first start of the year? Sounds like a 3-1 loss to me.

I see Morin's floor as being someone like Coburn, but more physical. What will separate Morin is if he can develop an offensive game.
- PhillySportsGuy

That's his floor? He could end up being a lot worse.

Not saying he will, but saying his floor is top-4 defenseman seems a little over-aggressive.

I agree. JVR will always leave you wanting more though.

I was disappointed with the trade at first. I was hoping they would get a more offensive defenseman. I feel Schenn played as well as JVR last year, but top 4 defensive defenseman are easier to find than top 4 offensive defenseman.

- PhillySportsGuy

Big forwards, like defensemen, are slower to develop. JVR is still only 24. He's progressing nicely. I see a very productive career in his future.

The Rangers have had 3 of the worst losses/efforts I've ever seen in 30 yrs, all in the first month this yr. BRUTAL. Just hope there's some effort on our part tonight, the NJ game last Sat was pathetically bad, no balls, down 4 in the 3rd to a rival who was winless & they just laid down.

He COULD end up being the defensive equivalent of Hugh Jessiman, yes. But that's most likely not going to happen. But yes, you're right. He could also die before he ever makes it to the pros, but it's not likely.

I saw a bunch of posts citing Berube having no time to implement his system, get practices in etc... Now if they lose tonight the 6 day layoff will be brought up.

Nothing ceases to amaze me.

what do you think the issue is? Coaching, injuries, bad goaltending, lack of effort? just curious to how the team goes from being so defensively sound to what the results have been

He isn't the only one who thinks Zadarov will be a much better player then Morin. That's not to say Morin can't develop into the better player but if I where to bet I would put my money on Zadarov. I know it doesn't mean much coming from a owner but the Knights owner said of all the players to ever play for the Knights ( which includes a pretty impressive list ) Zadarov has the highest potential of all of them. Potential doesn't also translate into results though so it won't be years till anyone finds out who got the better D man.
- blizzzard

At this point in time it's really up to the players, and what anyone says, really isn't going to have an outcome on what happens.

I can tell you when I get my pocket picked like that from behind, my coach will flat out tell me I was soft on the puck. that said, not to be ready on a turnover like that means the other players (Schenn/G) were not mentally in the game for that shift.
- nastyflyergirl

I don't think Coburn was soft on the puck there, I think Crosby made a great play. Coburn was about the only Flyers who busted his ass on the play. Not completely absolving Coburn from all blame, but he wasn't the biggest culprit on the play.

He's big, long, physical and can skate. Even if he develops just average puck skills, he can be a top 4 defenseman IMO.

Don't worry. The same guy will post next season "Why do the Flyers always rush defenseman to the NHL!!!???!?!"

Well as rough as Torts was, he was no dummy. He knew the teams strengths were to play it close to the vest, use your goaltender & defense as your best offense.

The players clearly voiced to Sather they wanted Torts out & they got what they wanted, a players Coach who is hands off in the room. It's on them to get the job done. They havn't.

No excuses but the 9 game road trip to start the season with a new Coach/system didn't help either. Nash's injury & the severity of it & Hank not up to par this year just adds to the mess right now.

I think coaches have a shelf life in today's NHL especially a taskmaster like Tortorella. He can wear out his welcome in short order.

As a Rangers fan, you shouldn't worry about results, the fact the players are happier now should have you all warm and fuzzy.

I find it amazing that players get sick of coaches so quickly. It's like 3 years without a cup and they're done.

We aim for optimism.

His floor is not ever setting foot in the NHL... his ceiling COULD be a a better Braydon Coburn, but it could also be Hal Gill with wheels. Who knows at this point... its way to early to tell.

What I can say is that he did impress me a bit in the preseason.

A Hal Gill with wheels is a top 4 defenseman.
