Huh? They didn't loan him back.

(BTW, thought you were being facetious with the initial question, not serious)

I don't understand why they don't add Laughton, keep Raffl/McGinn, and drop Dingleberry/Rosebud and Hall. We don't need a good squad playing 1:30/game. We need a 4th line that can play minutes and maybe pot a goal from time to time. Yea, I've heard Hall can win a faceoff. Him going 2-2 on a nightly basis really helps.

McGinn - G - Voracek
Schenn - Vinny - Simmonds
Talbot - Couturier - Read
Rinaldo - Laughton - Raffl

Then when Hartnell comes back, make the decision with McGinn and Raffl. I think both have earned an opportunity to stay on. Might be better to leave Raffl and 4th line and send McGinn back down. This way Berube can also reward/punish players by moving them up/down the lineup and we'd still have 4 lines that can play. Somethings got to change with only having one or two effective lines/game.

Well it's a moot point now; Laughton is in the OHL until his season ends (save for emergency recall purposes). But I don't get why he made the opening night roster as a scratch and then got sent down. Makes me think Homer and Lavi disagreed on if he was ready or not, and Lavi had to make him stance known.

I looked on hockeydb, and they list him as having played 1 OHL game.

Giroux just needs to get one goal and he'll feel the weight of the world come off his shoulders.
- BiggE

No, he needs others to step up to release the triple teams on him. If other guys become more dangerous, it will free up more time and space for Giroux to operate.

Maybe a placeholder game? He's still on the Flames' roster.

Elite Prospects is a better database:

Yeah, I looked there and saw he had 0 games. They should definitely keep him up, better than a point/game is pretty amazing right now.

I am assuming that the same rule that prevents Laughton from playing in the AHL would prevent him from playing in the Swedish Elitserien?

Oh...I wish the team had fired Laviolette after the Devils series when a coaching issue became obvious (take your pick between: 1) Didn't see a problem; 2) Saw a problem and had no answer; or 3) Saw a problem, had an answer but could not get the players to buy in or execute.) Then they could have had a thoughtful and focused search for a replacement. Instead, they jerked around through a short season and implied that Laviolette had bought himself more time with a meaningless strong finish based on an adjusted game plan he had no intention of maintaining. I have no idea how Berube will do but my gut tells me he is a default choice, much like Stevens, and the firing was knee jerk without much long term thought to it.

does anyone have a feeling for when the Flyers win their next game? how many wins and points this year? I have a feeling they will come on at the end of the year again and finish with the 7th pick

I agree. The problem is, given that they couldn't turn back the clock and fire him earlier, what would you have done at the 3 game point of the season? Is there a coach you could have somehow acquired better than Berube?

Wonder how long he can keep it up, though. The minute he hits a wall or hits a skid, you can bet all the second-guessing is going to start.

IMO, it's tempting to keep him up, but there's nothing for them to gain by burning a year off his contract while the team is in full rebuild.

It's probably better for his long-term outlook if they send him back. He's being heavily sheltered and given mostly offensive zone starts.

They will beat the Rags Thursday night. They are playing without Nash, Callahan, and Hagelin.

"My proposed change to the rule: Contracted players 19 years of age or older who've played three seasons of major junior hockey should be eligible for the AHL rather than returning to their junior team for a fourth season. This decision should be at the discretion of the NHL team that drafted and signed the player."

Fixed - I don't know if I'd want an 18 year old playing in the AHL. Some 18 year olds have completed three years of major junior hockey.

All this doom and gloom about the ineptitude of the teams is depressing.

Need some positive vibes from a Philly athlete through and through.

Granted, I would like to have a hot tub or a Delorean....but

I would have liked to have thought they had been thinking about it enough that they had talked to some potential choices. They did hire Laviolette from outside in mid-season and the Kings hired Sutter. Maybe Berube would have been the first choice anyway but I tend to think assistants are the first choice only when the existing coach leaves on his own volition.

Also agree with whomever indicated the GD were overrated (certainly not as brand marketers - they, along with Jimmy Buffett, are geniuses there. They could teach Wharton MBA's about marketing).

I know.... but if that (relatively rare) 18-year-old player is still clearly not ready for the AHL, either, then the prudent move for the NHL team is to have him play that fourth season in the CHL and consider him for the AHL at age 19. Case by case basis.

I grew up on the GD. Horrible studio albums, live albums were 100x better. Still not a fan of their music, but it seems like the live atmosphere is what they were all about. I never got to attend, and wouldn't have wanted to. Same with my favorite band H2O. Good, not great, studio albums (minus the first one) but one of the best live acts ever.

All of these proposals make sense. There has to be a solution that will be beneficial to all sides here, compared to the current arrangement.
- bmeltzer

Assuming that is a negotiation between the NHL and major juniors and nothing to do with the CBA

so where does Laughton really fit in with the Flyers? They seem to be set at center for the next 5 years with Vinny signed on and the ages of G and Couturier.

I think most (maybe not all) 18-year-old who are ready for pro hockey are usually NHL-ready (Crosby, Stamkos).
